CAT AL OG ING AN D
CLASSI FICA TI ON
The purpose of cataloging is
to put order into collection of
books so that the volumes
may be located and used for
reference and circulation.
The purpose of classification
is to facilitate the discovery of
knowledge in literature by
grouping together the books
according to the Dewey
Decimal Classification
System (DDC)
Tools in organization of
materials : Dewey Decimal
Classification System (DDC),
Cutter’s Author Table and
Anglo-American Cataloging Cataloging Tools
Rules.
Dewey Decimal Classification
It is a classification 000 – 099 Generalities
system, which 100 – 199 Philosophy &
divides human Psychology
knowledge into ten 200 – 299 Religion &
Mythology
main classes with 300 – 399 Social Issues &
further decimal Folklore
division using a 400 – 499 Language
notation of 500 – 599 Pure Sciences
numbers. It is 600 - 699 Applied
called decimal Sciences
system because 700 – 799 Arts &
knowledge is Recreation
divided and 800 – 899 Literature
subdivided in group 900 – 999 History and
Geography
of tens.
Sears List of Subject Headings
It is a printed list of subject
headings for the minds
representing various types of
libraries. By using the list as a
base for establishing subject
headings, the cataloger has a
standard on which to rely.
Consistency on both level of
specificity and accepted list
where the choice among
possible wordings has been
made and received is on the
list. By following the patterns
of headings printed in the list,
the cataloger will also have to
add new headings that will be
compatible with the tool.
C.A. Cutter’s three-figure
author table
Author numbers are
usually taken from
this table in which
numerals are
assigned to letters
of the alphabet in
the order of the
alphabet thus,
providing for the
alphabetical
arrangement by the
author.
Anglo – American Cataloging Rules
