Thomas Edison Interdisciplinary Project

1

Area of interaction: Human ingenuity

Considered as one of the greatest inventors the world has ever seen!
Despite his numerous brilliant inventions and innovations, several of his ideas were absolute duds.
2

Changed way of living forever!

Was Thomas Edison a genius?

This is what he had to say about it.. "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. A 'genius' is often simply a talented person who has done all of his or her

homework.2 2

In 1866, at age 19, Edison moved to Louisville, Kentucky, working for The Associated Press
The night shift allowed him to spend most of his time reading and experimenting In 1868, Edison returned home to find his mother was falling into mental illness and his father was out of work He ventured to Boston, landing a job for the Western Union Company 6

16

In 1869, Edison moved to New York City and developed his first invention, an improved stock ticker The Gold and Stock Telegraph Company was so impressed, they paid him $40,000 for the rights7 Edison was only 22 years old

In 1870, Thomas Edison set up his first small laboratory and manufacturing facility in Newark, New Jersey, and employed several machinists.7

In 1871 Edison married 16-yearold Mary Stilwell

By the end of the 1920s Thomas Edison was in his 80s and he slowed down somewhat, but not before he applied for the last of his 1,093 U.S. patents, for an apparatus for holding objects during the electroplating process.11

LIGHT BULB
In 1879 Edison had a bulb that lasted for two days

29

Improv ed the pre existin g light bulb

It was the first commercially viable one

Three factors in combination are generally Edisons light bulb did not last long, so inventor Lewis Latimer improved the recognized as contributing to Edisons success: light bulb by developing carbon filaments that lasted longer!!! 30 1)down A durable incandescent material It cuts on candles manufactured, big maintenance cost, wasted energy when there is heat going off the bulb, it is very fragile-the light bulb 2) Elimination of air from the bulb-a better 31 can break very easily in a vibrational environment!!!

LIMITATIONS

vacuum 3) A filament material of high resistance11

APPLICATIONS

The light bulb changed the world's industry -- businesses now could dramatically improve production available by running around the clock. The world changed in terms of leisure, too, as people who for centuries had retired with the sunset now ventured out far more often at night for social reasons.

Since the film rolls were not long enough and sturdy enough, Edison and his crew were not able to build a device based on Mareys technique. After invented, Edison developed his usage of kinetoscope. The Kinetoscope was a motion picture projector

invented in 1888 On August 24, 1891, Edison filed the patent for the camera (kinetograph) peep-hole viewer (kinetoscope) set-up, indicating the film width to be 35mm and the possibility of using a Motion pictures forever cylinder for futurechanged upgrades. how mankind was entertained. No longer many people need to travel long distances to see a show or hear a concert; they could go to a local movie hall!

THE FAILED INVENTIONS

The

greatest failure of Thomas Edison's career was his inability to create a practical way to mine iron ore. One concept that never took off was Edison's interest in using cement to build things.13

DO NOT LET FAILURES TO DISAPPOINT YOU, THINK OF SOMETHING NEW AND HOPE YOU WILL MAKE SUCCESS.14
