Introduction

Background of the study

Conceptual Framework

Correct and standardized health education for patients and their families can certainly have a positive impact on the health of clients. Hence, nurses must be able to follow the said standards. For this reason the concept from the JCAHO Patient and Family Education (PFE) Standard is used to support the study.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to determine the implementation of Patient and Family Education Standards of Benguet State University student nurses at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward. Specifically, it sought to answer the following: 1. Are the Patient and Family Education Standards implemented by the Benguet State University student nurses at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward, in terms of: a. Support to Patient and Family Participation b. Meeting of Patients Ongoing Needs c. Appropriate Topics for Patient Care d. Consideration of Patient and Family Preferences

Hypothesis of the Study

1.More than 50% of the Benguet State University student nurses implement the Patient and Family Education Standards at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward, in terms of: a.Support to Patient and Family Participation b.Meeting of Patients Ongoing Needs c.Appropriate Topics for Patient Care d.Consideration of Patient and Family Preferences

Methodology

Research Design

The researchers will utilize a descriptive and quantitative research method in order to gather data and analyze information on the implementation of the JCAHO Patient and Family Education Standards at Benguet General Hospital ObstetricsGynecology Ward by student nurses of Benguet State University.

Locale and Population

The target population were forty (40) randomly-selected Level IV students of Benguet State University who already went on duty at the ObstetricsGynecology Ward of Benguet General Hospital.

Instrumentation

The study used the questionnaire to obtain information on the implementation of the JCAHO Patient and Family Education Standards at Benguet General Hospital ObstetricsGynecology Ward by the student nurses of Benguet State University.

Statistical Treatment

Frequency is the tabular arrangement of data by classes or categories together with corresponding class. Then, the following percentile rank will be determined using the following formula:

Summary

This study aimed to determine the implementation of Patient and Family Education Standards of Benguet State University student nurses at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward. Specifically, it aimed to determine the Patient and Family Education Standards implemented by the Benguet State University student nurses at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward, in terms of: support to patient and family participation, meeting of patients ongoing needs, appropriate topics for patient care, and consideration of patient and family preferences.

The descriptive research design and a structured questionnaire are utilized to gather the data. The respondents were forty (40) randomly-selected Level IV students of Benguet State University who already went on duty at the ObstetricsGynecology Ward of Benguet General Hospital. The statistical methods used were relative frequency and percentage. The study was conducted from February to March 2013.

Findings

1. 65% of the respondents implement the support to patient and family education aspect of patient and family education standards. 2. 70% of the respondents implement the meeting of patients ongoing needs aspect of patient and family education. 3. 74.38% of the respondents implement appropriate topics for patient on educating the patient. 4. 55.94 of the respondents implement appropriate topics for patient care on educating the patients family. 5. 81.25% of the respondents consider patients preferences when implementing patient and family education. 6. 69.17% of the respondents consider patients family preferences when implementing patient and family education.

Conclusions

1. More than 50% of the Benguet State University student nurses implement the Patient and Family Education Standards at Benguet General Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Ward, in terms of support to Patient and Family Participation, Meeting of Patients Ongoing Needs, Appropriate Topics for Patient Care and Consideration of Patient and Family Preferences. 2. Considering the patients preferences when implementing patient and family education is the strength of the Benguet State University student nurses, among the other aspects of patient and family education.

Recommendations

1.The students of Benguet State UniversityCollege of Nursing to review the patient and family education standards and implement them effectively and efficiently. 2.The instructors of Benguet State University-College of Nursing to add topics regarding patient and family education standards on their discussions, lessons, and examinations.

3. Further studies on other aspects of patient care such as medication administration. 4. Future study to consider variables such as age, academic and clinical performance ratings.
