In the Display Properties window, click the Screen Saver tab, then click the Power button in the Energy Saving Features of Monitor box. Under Power Schemes, select Home/Office Desk. Set Turn Off Monitor for 15 minutes or less. Set Turn Off Hard Disks for 15 minutes or less. Set System Standby for 30 minutes or less. Click OK

APPROACH TO GREEN COMPUTING

Virtualization Power Management Power Supply Operating System Support Storage Video Card Display Materials Recycling Telecommuting

VIRTUALIZATION
The process of running two or more logical computer systems on one set of physical hardware Goals of virtualization is making the most efficient use of available system resources in its broader sense, it refers to the idea of sharing allows organizations to consolidate their servers onto fewer pieces of hardware, which can result in sizable cost savings

VIRTUALIZATION
Storage virtualization make it possible that copies of data that used to be stored on every computers disks can now be stored once in the shared storage subsystem. This approach would reduce the number of storage devices needed, the amount of power required, the heat produced and, the operational and administrative costs of back up, archival storage

POWER MANAGEMENT
Power management for computer systems are desired for many reasons: Prolong battery life for portable and embedded systems Reduce cooling requirements Reduce noise Reduce operating costs for energy and cooling Lower power consumption implies lower heat dissipation, which increases system stability, and less energy use, which saves money and reduces the impact on the environment

POWER MANAGEMENT
Undervolting: Some programs allow the user to manually adjust the voltages supplied to the CPU, which reduces both the amount of heat produced and electricity consumed. Some CPUs can automatically undervolt the processor depending on the workload
"SpeedStep" on Intel processors, "PowerNow!"/"Cool'n'Quiet" on AMD chips LongHaul on VIA CPUs With dynamic voltage and frequency scaling, the CPU core voltage, clock rate, or both, can be altered to decrease power consumption at the price of slower performance

STORAGE
Three routs are available:1) 3.5 desktop hard drive:
Reduced RPM low-power idle mode with fixed rotation speed Highest possible capacity, best performance

2) 2.5 laptop hard drive

smaller platters, smaller motors and firmware capacities up to 320GB

3) Solid state hard drive

Uses one-third the power of a 2.5" disk extremely expensive, capacities up to 64GB

DISPLAYS
Use LCD monitors instead of CRT. Because LCDs: LCD use an array of LEDs which reduces the amount of electricity used by the display. Up to 66% more energy efficient than CRTs 80% smaller in size and weight than CRTs, leading to fuel savings in shipping Produce less heat, need less AC to keep cool Lower intensity and steady light pattern are easier on the eyes LCD draws 40-60W maximum in a modest 19", 20", or 22" size while 21" CRT uses more than 120W.

MATERIALS RECYCLING
Computer recycling refers to recycling or reuse of a computer or electronic waste include finding another use for the system It allows for the safe extraction of the constituent materials for reuse in other products Recycling dealing with several health hazards
Lead in CRTs, batteries and PVC in computer body Mercury in fluorescent tubes Cadmium in some rechargeable batteries Liquid crystals

TELECOMMUTING
Telecommuting is working from a remote location (often ones home workstation) using computers, telephones and other remote capabilities, rather than commuting via automobile to perform equivalent work Benefits of telecommuting:
Conserving Energy reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to travel Preserving the Environment Improving Worker and Public Safety reduce the square footage per employee

APPLICATIONS

APPLICATION
System-Wide Green Computing
When investigating green alternatives for an entire organization Cloud computing

Individual Green Computing

techniques at the personal computer level power management

WAYS OF IMPLEMENTATION

IMPLEMENTATION
Replace petroleum filled plastic with bio-plastics, it require less oil and energy to produce Power-sucking displays can be replaced with green light displays made of OLEDs, or organic light-emitting diodes. Replace toxic materials like lead by silver and copper. Making recycling of computers (which are expensive and time consuming at present) more effective by recycling computer parts separately with an option of reuse or resale. Replace hard drives with solid-state, or flash, memory, which has no watt-hungry moving parts

IMPLEMENTATION
Buy a low power desktop or a laptop computer (40-90 watts) rather a higher power desktop (e.g. 300 watts). Computer power supplies are generally about 70 75% efficient and dissipate the remaining supply in heat. Higher energy efficiency uses less power directly, and requires less power to cool as well. As of 2007, 93% efficient power supplies are available. Buy a low power CPU, this reduces both power consumption and cooling requirements.

IMPLEMENTATION
Buy hardware from manufacturers that have a hardware recycling scheme, and recycle your old computer equipment rather than sending it to landfill. Turn your computer and monitor off when you are not using it. Enable hibernation using the power management settings Standby does not save as much power. Replace your CRT screen with an LCD screen. Avoid an unnecessary operating system version upgrade which requires a hardware upgrade

IMPLEMENTATION
Keep your PC or laptop for at least 5 years. Use server virtualization to aggregate multiple under-utilized servers onto more energy efficient server infrastructure Use blade servers instead of rack servers to reduce power consumption. Establish policies governing the acquisition, usage and disposal of computer hardware to minimize energy consumption and environmental impact
