Stress is the body's reaction to a change that requires a

physical, mental or emotional adjustment or response.

It depends upon individuals how they respond to the stressful situation. . Some individuals see the pressures of heavy work loads and deadlines as positive challenges that enhance the quality of their work and the satisfaction they get form their job.

This happened with employees of Adamjee life insurance. Their staff was suffering from heavy mental stress due to improper time management. The working schedule of adamjee life insurance was 9 hours a day and 5 days a week all employees were required to do late sittings daily to finish their work and in daily practice they get off at 8 or 9 at night, beside their normal working hours.

The management of adamjee life insurance took a performance evaluation and feedback from their employees regarding the work schedule.

From the evaluation management concluded that the stress was slowly affecting the performance of employees.
They realized that it was their work schedule and working hours which was creating the stress. Tired and exhausted employees Time wastage as most work done before tea breaks.

some external factor which were giving a rise to the stress amongst the employee and that was the emergency off. sudden strike call then their whole time table was disturbed and they were not able to complete their given task in remaining four days. Stress related factors: Long working hours. Difficult journeys to and from work. The way the company is managed. Inflexible working hours.

employees would have to work 8 hrs a day. The office will remain open on Saturdays. They now have 6 working days instead of 5 which was previously being done. For employees convenience office is open on Sundays In this way the employees will not face stress by working 9 continuous hrs and if their is an emergency than they have more days remaining to complete their given task.

CONCLUSION:

Research has also shown that work-related stress can have adverse effects: employee commitment to work staff performance and productivity staff turnover and intention to leave attendance levels staff recruitment and retention customer satisfaction organizational image and reputation

Organization should offer flexible working hours to their employees. Concept of flexi time can be used, employees can be provided with freedom of work hours Gym or other activities and sports facilities should be provided At the end of each day employees should reflect on what you've achieved rather than worrying about future work.

It's impossible to escape pressure at work altogether, so you need to learn how to manage stress effectively.

There are four basic approaches to dealing with stress removing or changing the source of stress learning to change how you react to a stressful event reducing the effect stress has on your body learning alternative ways of coping

STRESS AT WORKPLACE
Article By: Lyle H. Miller, Ph.D., and Alma Dell Smith, Ph.D. Journal of American psychology

Workers at every level are experiencing increased tension and uncertainty, and are updating their resumes. The loss of a job can be devastating, putting unemployed workers at risk for physical illness, marital strain, anxiety, depression, and even suicide.

A SENSE OF POWERLESSNESS: A feeling of powerlessness is a universal cause of job stress. Common to this job situation are complaints of too much responsibility and too little authority, FOR EXAMPLE Secretaries, waitresses.

YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION: Every employee should have a specific, written job description. A good job description is time limited. Set a specific date for a review and revision based on your mutual experience with this initial job description.

When youre a Square Peg and Your Job is a Round HoLE:

There are many reasons for staying in a job that doesn't fit you or that you don't particularly like. One reason can be the "golden handcuff"--having salary, pension, benefits, and "perks" that keep one tied to a job regardless of stress consequences.

WORKPLACE SETTING:
Sometimes your work setting creates physical stress because of noise, lack of privacy, poor lighting, poor ventilation, poor temperature control, or inadequate sanitary facilities.

WORKPLACE CULTURE:
Making oneself adapt to the various aspects of workplace culture such as communication patterns, hierarchy, dress code if any, workspace. Maladjustment to workplace cultures may lead to subtle conflicts with colleagues or even with superiors.

STRESS FROM WORK LOAD:

Lot of people have suffered and are suffering with work overload at office. These might result in various health conditions with symptoms of headaches, fatigue or muscular tension.

The Case Study: Work Stress At Madison Heights Police Department

Summary:

The Madison Heights Police Department, fails to recognize the negative impacts of stress upon their officers.
Many times officers choose to spend their off-duty time venting their frustrations with co-workers rather than spending quality time with their families that also augmented their stress. The divorce rate among police officers were rising as they were not able t give proper time to their families. They were assigned to a particular shift and they had to work regardless of holidays or other special occasions.

RECOMMENDATIONS: The police departments need to take more responsibility in educating, training, and combating officer stress. The department also needs to provide confidential counseling to officers that are being affected negatively by job stress.

Counseling through the psychologist and chaplain should be available for family members.
Orientation seminars for spouses will let them learn about the department first hand. The department should formulate a policy and procedure for these services.
