Access to all relevant documentation WPS, WPQR, drawings, specifications, etc Materials - Grade, condition, size Consumables - Type, condition,size Welder qualification Equipment - certified where necessary Preheat - maximum, minimum Weld preparations Fit up for welding: joint cleanliness root face, bevel angle, root gap, alignment Safety

JOINT FIT UP
Arguably the most important duty of the Welding Inspector.
If joint fit up is good then the completed weld will be good.

Incorrect joint fit-up; Will alter the stress pattern, so weld will not be as designed Could introduce stress raisers, fatigue life may affected Will make the weld more difficult to produce Will affect weld quality Could affect overall dimensions Will affect productivity

Check amperage, voltage, travel speed polarity Check welding technique - weld direction Check welding time Ensure adequate interpass cleaning Check interpass temperature Correct consumables Check root pass where access permits Check back gouging where applicable

After Welding
Ensure post weld cleaning Visual inspect weld for defects Visual check for arc strikes Check weld dimensions - contour, width Ensure joint is covered to slow cooling rate Inspect/monitor PWHT where applicable Check NDT reports Mark up repair areas where applicable Report on the weld/fabrication

Detail Material Action & Document Reference in accordance with drawing/WPS identified & can be traced to relevant test certificates in suitable condition (to good workmanship standard) WPS's are approved and available to welders (& inspectors)

are applicable to the joints to be welded
