Tutorial
1. Critically analyze the similarities and differences in any two short plays from the period.

Similarities
1. Colonialism-colonial mentality Prof Tuko- All his student must follow his rule (Martial law).

(Page 21) You are supposed to stay in this classroom from seven-thirty in the morning until three oclock in the afternoon!
Nobody is authorized to refused in this classroom (Page 26) I hereby declare Martial Law! The Coffin- Everyone must follow the government law..

(Page 38) there is no room for exceptions.

2. Both use imperial power and oppression system;

Prof Tuko: He forces his student to go to the airport.

(Page 18) This is an order from the district superitendant

(Page 18) I will not entertain any more complaint.

The coffin : The funeral parlour man uses his power to refuse to dig the hole. (Page 36) No, Sir! he said. But I dont think that the plot is wide enough if we dig so big as to get the coffin in (Page 37) You see, sir, the regulation says one dead is allotted one plot. its not allowed, sir. You look at all these graves in the cemetery, see? All same size.

Differences
Poverty Vs Wealth Prof Tuko: Poor sosio-economic background of the society (teachers and the students) (Page 40)- its true I work nights as waiter in Cubao. And thats because I earn so little in this school. (Page 13)- Ran out of toothpaste, sir (Bondying)

The coffin: This play is more on a wealthy family that insist on burying their grandfather in the big coffin (Page 32)- You see, the coffin was too big. It was so big we had to hire sixteen coolies to carry it from the funeral coach to the grave.
(Page 33)- I mean, how many people had a grandfather who enjoyed the honour of getting buried in such a rare, refined, solid, polished, grand and heavy coffin.

2. Analyze and discuss the ideas on education/family in the play and how it relates to social structure.

The system of Professor Tuko:

Education

Poor education system: Shows by the action of Prof. Tuko. - He does not update his lesson plan and he sleeps in the class. -Profesor Tuko needs to work as a waiter in a restaurant. Reflects that teachers wages are low until Prof. Tuko needs to have extra jobs to support his income.
(Page 40)- its true I work nights as waiter in Cubao. And thats because I earn so little in this school.

Family
The coffin is too big for the hole: 1. The narrators family still respect the culture even though they live in bureaucracy. E.g (pg 41)- three: chop off the extra wood on the sides of the coffin.

2. As the head of the family, the narrator makes a firm and wise decision. He respects his grandfathers decease. (Page 43) I dont know where I got the passion and where I got the courage. I just went on bluntly, You know, this is my grandfather getting buried.
No.No.No! I cant delay it and I wont delay it! I declared with all the firmness I could summon within me.
