HISTORY :Wine has been made in India for as many as 500 years. It was the early European travellers to the courts of the Mughal emperors Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries A.D. who reported tasting wines from the royal vineyards. Both red (Kandahar) and white wines (Bhokri, Fakdi, Sahebi etc.) were produced.
Introduction :Approximately 68 wineries are presently operating in the country with a total production of 10.2 million litres annually. Maharashtra is leading among the states with 60 wineries and 8.4 million litre production. Apart from this, 92,000 wine cases are imported .
Growth of Domestic Wine Industry :15+ active producers contributing to around a million plus cases
Retail re-evolution :Liberalized licensing norms. Emergence of modern trade. Liquor shop chains emerging. Modernization of independent retail shops and state controlled retail.
Hospitality Industry Growth :Growth of food and beverage outlets -High quality free standing outlets -Growth into tier 2 and tier 3 towns -Emergence of specialty outlets -Manpower quality improvement Wine Bars emergence with decreased license fees - Entry of wine companies Indage, Sula, UB.
