Why did you say that what you have is a person? What

makes a person, person? What about a human being, what are his characteristics? How would you differentiate a human being from a human person? When do you say that a human being is a human person? Is it possible that a human being may not transform in to a human person? Do you believe that a human being is not automatically a human person?

THE HUMAN BEING

To be called human being; one must possess the

characteristics of a human being Michael D. Morga in his book, What Makes Man Truly Human mentioned that human beings are not necessarily humans for two reasons:
a) it takes time and effort to grow to the point where his

own nature has reached full realization, b) it is very possible that an individual will not reach full development at all.

 In Filipino we have the saying, madaling maging tao, mahirap magpakatao. To be born with the characteristics of a human

being is easier than to live according to our innate and external characteristics as human beings. This is what we call PAGPAPAKATAO or the other term used by Maningas, PLEASING PERSONALITY.
To understand the difference between a human being and a human person we have to identify their characteristics which are very difficult because of this line that separates the two.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A HUMAN BEING

2. The Ability to Think (Thinking Being) - Human intelligence

- ability to discover new things in life, to

understand himself better and the rest of creation

- Can utilize his endowed intelligence to the

fullest - It is the nature of man to think, that means even if nobody tells him to think, he is still capable of using his facility to rationalize.

-Human intelligence needs to be nourished

and developed. -It can never grow and develop by itself. -MARAMI KA PANG KAKAINING BIGAS BAGO MO MARATING ANG KINALALAGYAN KO - PAPUNTA KA PA LANG PABALIK NA AKO - Those two sayings is supposedly true however in reality this does not happen in some cases

 There are those people who have grown

in age but refused to grow also in wisdom.

They are those who did not learn from

their experiences.

There are also those who have grown in

age and the same time matured in the way they should think and make decisions

 AGE= knowledge and wisdom. In Filipino, we have the saying, TUMANDA

KA NG WALANG PINAGKATANDAAN. This is the reason why for Filipino parents the older their children are the more they should be responsible. (MAS MATANDA KA KAYA DAPAT MAS NAKAKAINTINDI KA) In our tradition, older people are important because of their wisdom.

 Before the value of a person is not

measured by educational attainment, but rather it is based on age Experience+knowledge+realizations+ Interactions= intellectual development We affirm mans ability to think when we see progress and development in our midst.

The Ability to Feel (Feeling Being) Feel both positive and negative reactions All of us have the capacity to feel Feelings can be based on our psychological, emotional and intellectual status Feelings can never be 100% correct Feelings are subjective Love is not a feeling but a decision According to Morrie, love is a rational act.

- Feelings when raised into a higher level

of our consciousness is a very important element of becoming human person. - When mans feelings becomes an opportunity to love others then we no longer exist as a human being, we become human persons

4. The ability

to Talk (Communicating

Being) - Expressing what they see and think - Human beings do not only talk, they communicate - A human being may be able to express himself to the best of his abilities and yet will never reach the essence of genuinely communicating with others.

All our words will be useless unless they come from within (Mother Teresa) - Communication is not only a matter of self-expression.

- It is a means of building relationship,

of attaining harmony and peace among people.

-Knowledge and ideas are not the only things expected from the human person but the message of love through their LIFE.

Talents and Potentials (Potential Being) -can be inherited or acquired -talents and potentials used for the benefit of others especially the less fortunate ones can make the human beings, a human person.

To become a human person, one must

become a human being first Having the qualities of a human being is a pre-requisite to becoming a human person. The human being is both corporeal and spiritual (CCC # 362) To become a human person does not only mean to have a body but to use this body according to its purpose.

 A human person is a being who has a

body that is capable of being directed to the source of his/her life.

Once the being was able to transform

his/her life to what he/she is supposed to become he/she is then no longer just a being but a human person

A Human person uses his/her

intelligence not only for his/her personal use.

 A human being can transform himself to a human person because of his/her capability to know himself/herself, others and God.

Human person has the capacity to love

Love is a continuous experience of death and dying to the self.

LOVE ONE ANOTHER OR DIE

To become a human person is - for the human being to live life according to his/her nature, origin, dignity and purpose.

A HUMAN PERSON is a HUMAN BEING in the process of developing himself. Thus he is HUMAN BEING in PROGRESS. His life is a continuous struggle and process of becoming a human person.

ORIGIN AND NATURE OF THE HUMAN PERSON

Darwins Theory- we are from animals= man is by

nature bad. SAPAGKAT AKO AY TAO LAMANG Human person is capable of being holy--- Divine element in Man (When God blew into the nostrils of man the breath of life) To say that we are merely human beings deny ourselves of our true nature and origin.

 ORIGIN: GOD NATURE: GOODNESS

Human Person is a Human Being with a Purpose

Without purpose, we lose the meaning of our

existence When we lose the meaning of existence, then we lose our sense of purpose The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment, your peace of mind, or even your happiness.

Human Person is a Human Being with a Purpose

It is far greater than your family, your career,

or even your wildest dreams and ambitions. The search for purpose in life has puzzled people for thousands of years.

Human Person is a Human Being with a Purpose

Thats because we typically begin at a

wrong starting point----ourselves. We ask a self-centered question like,

What do I want to be? What should I do with my life?

What are my goals, my ambitions, my

dreams for the future?

 But focusing on ourselves will never

reveal our lifes purpose. The Bible says, It is God who directs the lives of his creatures, everyones life is in His power. (RICK WARREN)

 ORIGIN OF LIFE--- GOD

God wanted to share eternity with man PURPOSE: not simply to be born, enjoy the

rest of creation and in the end to die but to share in the divine life of God to live an everlasting life that is with God.

But we have to work on this to be worthy of

His kingdom-- to live our life in obedience to His will

The Dignity of the Human Person

Dignity ----we are created in Gods

image and likeness Challenge: To continuously MAGPAKATAO, PAGPAPAKATAO is the very dignity of the human person

the four dimensions of our human life namely;

SOCIAL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, and MORAL.

These four dimensions of human life is something that

the rest of creation does not have.
