Introduction
ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode It is a high speed, connection oriented switching and multiplexing technology capable of transmitting voice, video and data and interconnecting LANs ATM is asynchronous because information streams can be sent independently without the need of a common clock

History of ATM

Features of ATM

ATM Service Categories

ATM Switching
also known as fast packet switching. ATM switching node transports cells from the incoming links to outgoing links Two functions at each switching node are performed by a connection set up procedure. 1) A unique connection identifier at the incoming link and the link identifier and a unique connection identifier at the outgoing link are defined for each connection. 2) Routing tables at each switching node are set up to provide an association between the incoming and outgoing links for each connection.

Cont
The basic functions of an ATM switch can be stated as follows. Routing Queuing Header translation

Advantages
ATM supports voice, video and data allowing multimedia and mixed services over a single network. High evolution potential, works with existing technologies Provides the best multiple service support Supports delay close to that of dedicated services Ability to connect LAN to WAN High speed Mbps and possibly Gbps

Disadvantages
Flexible to efficiencys expense, at present, for any one application it is usually possible to find a more optimized technology Cost, although it will decrease with time New customer premises hardware and software are required Competition from other technologies -100 Mbps FDDI, 100 Mbps Ethernet and fast Ethernet

Applications
ATM combines the low delay of circuit switched network with bandwidth flexibility and high speed of packet switched network Its advanced application such as remote sensing ,3D interactive simulations Tele-instruction, biological tele research and medical tele consultations.

Recent Development
Interest in using native ATM for carrying live videos and audio has increased recently In these environment very high quality of service are required to handle linear audio and video streams Towards this goal standards are being developed such as AES47 The largest ATM network is developed by the Eighteen major European network operators.

Conclusion
ATM is a flexible and powerful technology and enables transmissions over a variety of carrier system. Its designed for high performance multimedia networking, and suitable for bursty traffic. ATM technology is a powerful common platform for LAN and WAN.

However, the success of ATM will be determined by two sequential events: first how fast the standard is finalized and then how fast can vendors bring ATM products to the market.
