An interpretation of the Cosmology of
the Koran & a critique of Islamic
Fundamentalism

The Sun, the Moon & the Stars
According to the Koran:
1. The Sun is a little light in the Sky that moves above a flat stationary
Earth & which goes underground at night.
3. The Moon is another little light that moves across the Sky at night.
While out of sight, it is hidden in special rooms in the Sky.
5. The Stars are also just little lights which are connected to the solid
Sky dome.Like the Moon, they are hidden in special rooms in the
Sky during daytime.

The Sun
1. According to the Koran, the Sun is just a little light in the Sky.
2. The Sun is said to move across the Sky above a stationary
Earth.
3. At night, the Sun goes underground to its resting place. It then
travels East, possibly under the Flat Earth to literally rise again
out of a large body of water in the morning.
4. The Sun may float or swim in a Heavenly ocean during the
daytime & in an underground ocean at night.
5. The Sun is roughly the same size as the Moon & a similar
distance away.

Surah 12:4
Josephs dream
from God
God sends a prophetic
message to the Patriarch
Joseph involving sheaths
of corn & heavenly bodies
bowing to him.
God represents the Sun &
Moon as little lights that
can move about the sky
without any detrimental
effects on Earth.Why would
God provide such false
information?

Analysis
1. At Night, the Sun leaves the Sky and goes to a resting place.
2. This resting place is underground or under water in the West
3. There are specific places on Earths surface where the Sun
rises & sets that a person can go to.
4. In the morning, the Sun rises up into the sky, a long way off in
the East & at night it goes back underground.
5. The Koran does not seem to know that during Night time in
one part of the World, there is daytime on the other side of the
World. It has no concept of local time.
6. This implies a Geocentric Cosmology
7. There is a hint of the Ancient Middle Eastern belief that the
Sun goes under the Flat Earth at Night, from West to East,
possibly on a subterranean Ocean.

Response to Fundamentalist
Counterarguments.
1. These passages are historical and mention the deeds of a person
who is said to have existed. They should be read literally.
2. The terms “Sunrise” & “Sunset” are linguistic relics of a time before
AD1700 when virtually everyone thought that the Earth was static &
that the Sun moved. These terms reflect our ancestors limited
knowledge. However, God does not suffer from limited
knowledge. When God refers to the motion of the Sun, he means it
literally.
3. The Koran does not say that the Sun disappeared below the
horizon. It says that the Sun entered a body of water just like in
many Ancient Myths.
4. The name “Land of the Rising Sun” for Japan was first used in
Ancient China when it was believed that the Sun did literally rise in
the East near Japan. The name persists today even though the
original justification for it is no longer accepted. The Koran seems to
agree with the Ancient Chinese Geocentric belief.

• According to the Koran, the Moon is just a little light in the Sky.
• During daylight, the Moon goes to its resting place known as the
“Mansions of the Moon”. These are rooms in the Sky.
• The Moon moves through 28 Mansions every month.
• The Moon may float or swim in a Heavenly ocean at night.
• The Moon is roughly the same size as the Sun & a similar distance
away.
• Mohammed supposedly split the Moon in two 1400 years ago, but
there is no Scientific or Historical evidence for this supposed
miracle.

Interpretation
Sometimes, Islamic
Fundamentalists try and avoid
the Geocentric reference to

trying to claim that this verse
refers to the Sun orbiting the
centre of the Galaxy.
But this verse describes the Sun
orbiting in the same manner as
the Moon. That is around the
Earth. The concept of a Galaxy is
not in the Koran.

Surah 75:5-10 The real causes of Eclipses
The Moon orbits the Earth once a month, but at 5 degrees from the
plane of the Earths orbit around the Sun. Far from being a rare event,
there is an Eclipse somewhere on Earth at least twice every year.
Surahs 36:40 & 75:5-10 verses suggest that the Koran has no
understanding of why Eclipses occur or how often. This is because it
does not understand modern Astronomy.
Indeed, Surah 75:5-6 implies that the Sun and Moon are the same
size & that they are the same distance away from the Earth.

Conclusion
3rd April 2009 07 The Sun, the Moon & the Stars 147
Conclusion – Astronomical errors in
the Koran
• According to the Koran, the Sun is a little light in the that moves
above a flat stationary Earth & which goes underground at night.
• The Koran implies that the Moon is another little light that moves
across the Sky at night. While out of sight, it is hidden in special
rooms in the Sky.
• The Stars are just little lights which are connected somehow to the
solid Sky dome.Like the Moon, they are hidden in special rooms in
the Sky during daylight.
• How can the Koran be the word of God with all this nonsense in it?
