EXERCISE 11
Ali Basmaci
OUTLINE
Objective Purpose Background Knowledge Procedure Factors affecting slow flight Safety Review
Ali Basmaci
OBJECTIVE
To learn proper flight techniques for precise control while operating within the slow flight speed range To learn to recognize symptoms when approaching the slow flight regime and avoid inadvertent entry into a potentially dangerous situation
Ali Basmaci
PURPOSE
We fly slow and low to the ground on every flight
Think about takeoffs and landings It is important to develop the skills required to handle the aircraft at slow speeds
Coordination will be well developed when precise control of the aircraft in slow flight is achieved SAFETY if we can recognize the symptoms to stalls and spin we can avoid them
Preventative medicine vs. diagnostic medicine
Keep in mind, during your training it is just as important to develop the skills required to recover from any stalls spins or unusual attitudes you may inadvertently encounter
Ali Basmaci 3
BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE
Asymmetric propeller loading (P-Factor) Torque Slipstream Power Curve
Ali Basmaci
PROCEDURE - ENTRY
HASEL check
Height
Sufficient to allow a recovery at or above 2000 AGL
Area
Avoid built up areas
Security
Secure all loose objects, ensure harnesses are fastened
Engine
Perform a pre maneuver checklist
Lookout
Two 90o turns or a 180o turn
Ali Basmaci
PROCEDURE - ENTRY
Smoothly reduce power to approximately 1500 RPM Maintain altitude by increasing the back pressure on the control column.
Note the drop in airspeed
As you approach the Minimum Controllable Airspeed increase power to maintain a constant airspeed and altitude
Minimum Controllable Airspeed and the power setting required to maintain altitude is airplane dependent
Refer to the POH supplied by the manufacturer
PROCEDURE - DURING
Maintain an effective scan Make use to your pre-selected visual reference Note:
Poor forward visibility Poor engine cooling Ailerons less effective
Ali Basmaci
PROCEDURE - RECOVERY
Power FULL Carburetor Heat COLD (if applicable) Lower pitch attitude to maintain desired altitude while flying straight and coordinated Upon reaching cruise speed reduce power to cruise setting Trim REMEMBER: Once established in slow flight pitch for speed, throttle for altitude How would all this change if we decided to execute slow flight with flaps?

SAFETY
Always perform some sort of pre-maneuver check before practicing any sort of upper air work Is it a good idea to be flying for prolonged periods of time in slow flight?
Ali Basmaci

REVIEW
Can you explain the importance of every component of the HASEL check previously discussed Why is it important to practice slow flight?
