Quality Function Deployment (QFD)

Mohan Khond Mechanical Engineering Department College of Engineering , Pune

Learning Objectives
The basic aim of presentation is to describe the methodology of QFD. Various Steps associated in QFD and the development of interrelationship matrix. Application of QFD with suitable illustration and case study .

Why QFD?
Survival in world class competition Retaining and enhancing market share Shorter product development cycle Customer awareness

Quality Function Deployment

Quality function deployment is literal translation of the Japanese words HIN SHIT SU KINO TENKAI The concept of QFD was introduced in Japan by YOJI AKAO in 1986 The QFD methodology was developed at Mitsubishis Kobe Shipyard

Quality-Quality is what the customer says it is.(A. Feigenboum) Function-In this case it is aim, purpose, operation,or action Deployment - The meaning of deployment is to operationalised or
to bring out

QFD defined as a series of translations from customer needs to product characteristics and ultimately to manufacturing procedures. Quality function Deployment is a team-based management tool in which customer expectation are used to drive the product development process

It is disciplined approach to product design, engineering, and production and to provide in depth evaluation of product. Customer needs are operationalised as production process instruction that will produce outputs with desired characteristics. This method has been described as set of planning and communication routines that facilitate cooperation between marketing, design, and manufacturing during design process .

Characteristics of QFD
Qualitative technique. Use of Interdisciplinary team. Uncovering new problems and facts . Customer driven

Steps in QFD
List Customer Requirements. (WHATs) List Technical Descriptors. (HOWs) Develop an relationship matrix between WHATs and HOWs Develop an Interrelationship matrix between HOWs Competitive Assessment Develop Prioritized Customer Requirement Develop Prioritized Technical Descriptors Calculation of Absolute and Relative Weight.

Fig-1 House of Quality

Case study
A company that manufactures bicycle components such as cranks, hub, rims, etc, wants to expands their product line by also producing handlebar stems for mountain bikes.

Adding relationship Matrix to the House of Quality

Interrelationship Between Technical Descriptors

Adding prioritized customer requirement

Calculation

Absolute weight is product of Column in the relationship matrix and importance to customer e.g. For Aluminum(9x8+ 1x5+ 9x5+ 9x2+ 9x7+ 3x5+ 3x3)=227 Relative weight is determined by taking the dot product of column in relationship matrix and column for absolute weight in prioritized customer requirement For die casting (3x16+ 9x8+ 9x5+ 3x2+ 0x18+ 3x5+ 9x3)=213

Conclusion
It is based on the calculation of absolute weight for technical descriptor and relative weight for technical descriptor Greater value of absolute weight indicate that handle bar Aluminum die casting .The relative weight also indicate that handle bar stem should be Aluminum die casting .
