Background & Justification


Dairy products comprise one of the biggest components of total food imports into Africa The current level of Dairy production in Africa is amongst the lowest in the world Increased Dairy production would make a major contribution to food security in Africa particularly protein Dairy has the capacity to increase economic growth and create job opportunities using existing natural resources and linkages through the value chain of the Dairy industry

Wealth Creation as a result of the Dairy Africa Initiative will contribute significantly to poverty reduction particularly in rural areas in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Dairy will make a significant contribution to sustainable crop/livestock integration & improve soil fertility through nutrient recycling Development of the Dairy sector will enhance efficient utilization of Agro-industrial by-products Dairy Africa will contribute substantially to the objectives of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP)

VISION
Sustainable Dairy Development in Africa

MISSION
To establish procedures that will lead to enhanced sustainable Dairy production in Africa in order to address food security, create wealth & reduce rural poverty through the Dairy value chain
To contribute to: Food security by substantially satisfying the dairy product needs of Africa (CAADP) Reduce the dependence in Africa on imported dairy products Poverty reduction by modernizing the dairy sectors (SMART) The generation of rural employment through engagement / involvement of the dairy value chain (MDG)

Objectives:
1. Empower and create financially self sufficient and profitable dairy industries 2. Maximize the economic dairy potential of African countries 3. Develop dairy in an Ecologically sustainable (environmentally friendly) manner 4. Develop models that are replicable 5. Increase total national milk production 6. Increase per capita consumption of dairy products 7. Increase productivity of the dairy cow 8. Positively influence policy on dairy in Africa

Modus Operandi
1. Develop a Dairy African Structure that dovetails with the various levels of political structure of the AU Dairy Africa Initiative (UNECA) National Dairy Organizations Regional Dairy Organizations

At each level involve the following role players:


Primary Dairy Industry Organizations Secondary Dairy Industry Organizations Dairy / Livestock Research and Extension Policy Makers

2. Create an efficient Network for the free flow of and access to information
Website, e-mail, experts from each target group Share research, standards, training material, promotion material, market information, best practices, experience

3. Create a Data base of Contacts


Suppliers throughout the value chain, Markets, Mentor base, twinning possibilities, investment opportunities

4. Develop Policy Proposals to Further the goals of MDG, CAADP & SMART through Dairy
Individual Countries, African Regions, AU & Trade blocks
