GREEN BUILDING CONCEPT

Anand EP, IDSE

What is Green Building Concept? Green building also known as green construction or sustainable building is the practice of creating structures using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-cycle

What makes the building Green? Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity Reducing waste, pollution and environment degradation

Objectives The common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment

How to achieve the objectives? Use of non-toxic, recyclable and environment-friendly building materials Use of locally available materials as much as possible, to reduce transportation costs and pollution Conservation of water through lower demand and better harvesting

Water reuse for some applications Use

of energy-efficient and eco-friendly equipment Maximum use of natural light and heat so that lighting, cooling and heating appliances are used to a minimum Maximum use of solar energy

Benefits of Green Building

Green

homes can have tremendous benefits, both tangible and intangible.

Tangible benefits:
Energy savings: Water savings: 20 30 % 30 50%

Benefits of Green Building

Intangible benefits:
Air quality Excellent day lighting Health & wellbeing of the occupants Safety benefits and conservation of scarce national resources

How do buildings affects environmental impact? Buildings account for a large amount of land use, energy and water consumption, and air and atmosphere alteration Reducing the amount of natural resources buildings consume and the amount of pollution given off is seen as crucial for future sustainability

How do buildings affects natural resources? Buildings, and the transportation infrastructure that serves them, replace natural surfaces with impermeable materials, creating runoff that washes pollutants and sediments into surface waters Urban runoff constitutes a major threat to water resources, as it is one of the leading source of impairment in rivers, lakes, and estuaries

How do buildings affect climate change? The energy used to heat and power our buildings leads to the consumption of large amounts of energy, mainly from burning fossil fuels - oil, natural gas and coal - which generate significant amounts CO2, the most widespread greenhouse gas Reducing the energy use and greenhouse gas emissions produced by buildings is the effort to slow the pace of global climate change

Construction

and demolition debris that degrades in landfills may generate methane, and the extraction and manufacturing of building materials may also generate greenhouse gas emissions

What building types can be green? Any type of building has the potential to become a green or sustainable building. New buildings may be designed, built and operated to be green buildings. Existing building can also become green through remodeling, retrofitting and improved operations.

What are the economic benefits of green building? Well-designed, constructed, operated and maintained green buildings can have many benefits, including durability; reduced costs for energy, water, operations and maintenance; Improved occupant health and productivity; and the potential for greater occupant satisfaction than standard developments.

green building may cost more up front, but can save money over the life of the building through lower operating costs. These savings may be more apparent through life-cycle assessment (LCA).

Site selection and planning buildings Selection of site near by basic amnesties viz school, hospital, pharmacy, bank/ATM, fitness centre, grocery store, laundry, library, post office, etc Minimum disturbance to building site Excavated soil = Filled soil Provide 15% of site land for Landscaping Plantation with drought tolerant species

Site selection and planning buildings Soil erosion control measures Permeable pavements Rain water management On-site Grey water treatment

Building Design Orientation: East-West Providing large openings for daylighting Large projections over East and West walls Envelope Measures
Glazing Wall insulation Roof insulation Roof gardening

Building Design CFC free HVAC equipment Renewable energy for on-site power generation and use within the building Segregation of organic, inorganic and e-waste Minimise construction waste, segregation and sending back to manufacturing units On-site organic waste management

Materials Environment friendly materials: Fly ash bricks Use of reused materials: Fly ash blocks, Tiles, Steel, Glass, Cement, False Ceiling, Aluminium and Composite Wood Rapidly renewable materials: Bamboo, wool, cotton insulation, agrifiber, linoleum, wheat board, strawboard and cork Local materials

Materials Use of salvage materials: Furniture, door window frames, bricks, panelling, etc Minimise the usage of virgin wood

Indoor Environmental Quality Prohibition of smoking in the common area Maximise the daylighting Indoor air quality: Fresh air ventilation Exhaust system: Bathrooms and kitchen Use low or no VOC (volatile organic compound) content material for interior wall finishes like paints and adhesives

Indoor Environmental Quality Use carpets made of naturally available materials like coir, wool etc Building flush out: To get ride of exposure to indoor airborne contaminants Cross ventilation

Water Efficiency Most of the Asian countries including India are water stressed Green Houses encourages use of water in a self - sustainable manner through
Reducing: Low flow & flush water fixtures, waterless urinals, etc Recycling Reusing: Gardening, Flushing, Car washing, etc

Energy Efficiency Lighting consumes 10% of total energy

Use CFL/LED lights Motion sensors Electronic ballasts Natural lights Timer controlled operation for outdoor units

Energy Efficiency Air conditioning consumes 20% of total energy

Select atleast 3 star BEE equipment Set thermostat at Green temperatures Incorporate Electronic timer switch Use an interior fan in conjunction with window air conditioner Place unit below the tree shade Minimise the openings

Energy Efficiency Refrigeration consumes 12% of total energy

Set temperatures at optimal level
Food compartment between 36 and 40 F Freezer between 0 and 5 F

Make sure refrigerator door seals are airtight Leave enough space between refrigerator and the walls or cabinets Regularly defrost refrigerators and freezers

Energy Efficiency Geyser consumes 32% of total energy

Use solar water heaters

Energy Efficiency Others consumes 26% of total energy

Use washing machines with full load Unplug the electrical/electronic appliances when not in use Use microwave oven in lieu of conventional oven

Reduced Use of Fossil Fuels Fossil fuel is a slowly depleting resource, world over The use of fossil fuel for transportation has been a major source of pollution Use of alternate fuels for transportation and captive power generation Use of mass transportation systems

Reduced Use of Virgin Materials Minimum use of virgin wood Use of wood from old furniture Use of recycled materials

Handling of House-hold wastes Handling of waste in residential buildings is extremely difficult as most of the waste generated is not segregated at source and has a high probability of going to land fills This continues to be a challenge to the municipalities which needs to be addressed. Encouraging green homes to segregate the house hold waste

Health and Well-being of Occupants Health and well-being of occupants is the most important aspect of Green Homes
Ensure good daylighting and ventilation Minimise indoor air pollution
