Introduction
Cooperative bank- serving mostly the rural rich Commercial bank -mainly concentrated in urban areas Hence did not target the rural poor, To provide solution to the financial needs of the consumers in rural areas

Regional Rural Banks (RRBs)


Recommended by Narasimham committee in 1975. Initially, 5 RRBs sponsored by Syndicate Bank, SBI, PNB, UCB and UBI. The Government passed the Regional Rural Banks Act, 1976. The Central Government, State Governments and the Sponsor Banks hold the equity of RRBs in the ratio of 50:15:35 respectively.

Objective
Provide cheap and liberal credit facilities Save the rural poor from the moneylenders. Act as a catalyst element and thereby accelerate the economic growth. Cultivate the banking habits and mobilize savings Increase employment opportunities by encouraging trade and commerce. Encourage entrepreneurship in rural areas.

Encourage entrepreneurship in rural areas. Cater the needs of the backward areas which are not covered by the other efforts of the Government. Develop the underdeveloped regions and thereby strive to remove economic disparity between regions.

The Agricultural credit given by RRBs may be grouped under 3 categories
Direct Agricultural Advances Allied Activities Indirect Agricultural Advances

Branches
At the end of June 1999, 196 RRBs are functioning in the countries The number of RRBs came down to 133 in 2006 At present there are 84 RRBs in the country Of the total, 75 RRBs were profit-making while the remaining seven had registered losses at the end of March 2011

Stages of Development
The performance of RRBs during the last 3 decades can be categorized into 3 phases as follows: 1975 - 1986 - Expansion Phase 1986 - 1995 - Declining Phase 1995 - 2006 - Turn Around Phase
