artificial lighting represents a major component of design buildings. Proper lighting can enhance task performance, improve the appearance of an area, or have positive psychological effects on occupants. Lighting is classified by intended use as general, accent, or task lighting, depending largely on the distribution of the light produced by the fixture. Task lighting is mainly functional and is usually the most concentrated, for purposes such as reading or inspection of materials. For example, reading poor-quality reproductions may require task lighting levels up to 1500 lux ,and some inspection tasks or surgical procedures require even higher levels. Accent lighting is mainly decorative, intended to highlight pictures, plants, or other elements of interior design or landscaping. General lighting (sometimes referred to as ambient light) fills in between the two and is intended for general illumination of an area. Indoors, this would be a basic lamp on a table or floor, or a fixture on the ceiling. Outdoors, general lighting for a parking lot may be as low as 10-20 lux (1-2 footcandles) since pedestrians and motorists already used to the dark will need little light for crossing the area.

INTRODUCTION

FI House

It was designed by Punto Arquitectnico, Alejandra Molina Gual, Mauricio Rosales Aznar and Israel Ramrez Segura in collaboration with Architect Manuel Ferrer Lpez. Being situated on a flat terrain near the city of Mrida, the dwelling is designed to take advantage of the natural sunlight, wind and fresh air and having the opportunity to maximize the external view also it works perfectly as the general lighting for exteriors which only have lighting around the pathways. The propertys land area is bordered by a concrete fence that also provides privacy to the owners of this amazing house bearing the lights for the pathways.

Drawing on the dichotomy of Chandlers ranching history and high tech future, lighting sought to establish the buildings nighttime presence, encourage public interaction with the building and inner courtyard, and convey the citys transparent message. Stone forms, representative of the historic past of the city, are illuminated by warm MH lighting that accents texture. In contrast, glass and metal elements subtly reference Chandlers chip industry future with cool white light. Referencing Chandlers high tech industry, cool white LED digital lines represent data streams flowing down the faade and onto the lobby ceiling, drawing visitors inside.

Courtyard lighting sought to encourage public usage while promoting a sense of safety. The design creatively utilizes perceptual brightness of illuminated landscaping, canopies, and views inside through glazing to create a perimeter of brightness. The notion of public transparency is enhanced with views into the illuminated interiors. Landscape lighting creates human scale and adds a layer of visual texture.

United States Institute of Peace by Lam Partners

Prominently located near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the United States Institute of Peace contains offices, an international conference center, and public exhibition and event space. The wing-like roofs connect the buildings three curving sections, enclosing two atria below. These multilayer translucent structures presented the most challenging lighting problem to light the roofs with no visible sources so they glow softly both inside and outside. A pervasive lighting theme is present throughout, revealing and animating but never competing with the architecture.

The translucent roofs are comprised of outer diffusing glass and an inner white membrane, with structure sandwiched in between. Extensive computer modeling, material sample testing and a full-scale mockup in Germany were required to determine the roofs transmissive and diffusing characteristics and to validate the lighting solution.A central lighting control system employs occupancy sensing, daylight sensing, scheduling, and local preset scene control techniques for maximum energy savings and occupant satisfaction. T5HO cove fixtures in the tops of walls light the atria roofs. Digital addressable ballasts allow light output to be tuned along the roof perimeter and dimmed overall, effectively accentuating the roofs curvature. This single source simultaneously provides the interior ambient lighting and the exterior surface glow.

The New Acropolis Museum , England

The architectural lighting is minimal yet plays a complimentary role. Light is used as a tool to replicate, as far as possible, the outdoor conditions under which many of the architectural sculptures were originally seen. As dusk falls, the architectural lighting builds up forming a key narrative element of the set. Lighting is dramatic, punctual and carefully manipulated to highlight the contrast between existing and missing artifacts helping the visitor distinguish the surviving collection. Careful consideration is given into framing with spotlights only the exhibits, thus avoiding visual disruptions and intense shadows.

In the Archaic Gallery, the glass treatment on the north facing facades and the skylight profiles have been designed to optimise the natural light of the Attican sky. On the glazed faade, diffuse screen print treatment is used on the lower panels while overlapping dim-out blinds are applied on the upper panels for optimum solar screening. The asymmetry of the daylight distribution contributes to soft modelling and atmospheric light for the sculptures allows all electric lighting to be switched off during the day, making this a truly sustainable lighting approach. Fluorescent lamps concealed within the skylights supplement the daylight as it gets dark. A layer of accent lighting for enhance individual sculptures.

The highlight of all galleries is the Parthenon Gallery at the top of the museum where the Parthenon marbles are appreciated under daylight with the Acropolis seen in the background. The gallerys facades are double-glazed and treated with varying density of screen-printed technology to keep out the intense sun and sky glare while retaining the visual connection with the Parthenon. Adopting principles more commonly practiced in the theatre, the daylighting strategy configures linear continuous skylights in the roof allowing daylight from above to graze down both the friezes and the metopes thus enhancing the modelling effect of the sculptures.

Garantibank Headquarters, Istanbul

The 30-foot-tall flagpole (10 meters) on the top of the building was lit in a way that provides both style and functionality to the installation. Covered in 200 feet (60 meters) of Sweled Ultra Bright LED Neon Flex RGB tubing, the color of the pole indicates the weather conditions in Istanbul for the following day, which is programmed daily from inside the building. The entire lighting system, including the Aquaram color sequence, was pre-programmed on computers and loaded onto 5 LanBox-LCE mini DMX controllers, which are integrated with the master operating system for the entire bank building. The biggest challenge to the team was that the bank was built several years ago, without consideration to exterior lighting. Spectra oversaw the construction of 28 custom brackets for the Aquaram/ArenaVision fixutures to mount 5 feet out (1 1/2 meters) from the face of the building and allow for a 6 tilt. They also had to custom manufacture the braces for the LED tubes on the flagpole to allow visibility from all angles.
