Musicians of Estonia

The most important cultural events for Estonians is the Estonian Song and Dance Celebration which takes place in Tallinn.

905 choirs and 26, 430 singers and musicians performed in Song Celebration and XVIII Dance Celebration with the theme "To Breathe as One."

`Days of Estonian Music` is the festival of the Estonian music. It is a tradition which came into being in 1979. It is the biggest local event and an opportunity for the majority of composers to present their new ideas and compositions.

Today the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra has 100 musicians. The average season includes 60 concerts.

Lauri Nebel
He was born on 11 October
1948. He is an Estonian actor and magician.

Vahur Afanasjev
was born on August 24, 1979 in Tartu, Estonia. He is an Estonian writer, filmmaker and musician.

Afanasjev graduated from Tartu University in 2002, studying Economic policy. He has been a member of a literary group since 1998, and a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 2006. He has worked as journalist, copywriter and creative director. Since 2005 Afanasjev has lived in Brussels, Belgium.

Afanasjev makes electronic music, punkish eclectic guitar rock, blues and country and experimental noise pop. Two of his recordings were on CD of the singing writers. He has also written lyrics for Orelipoiss, Skriimsilm and Pris Anny.

Eduard Srmus
He was born on 9th July 1878 in Luunja near Tartu, Estonia and died on 16th August 1940 in Moscow. He was a famous early 20th century Estonian and Russian violinist.

Arvo Prt
He born on September 11th 1935. He is an Estonian classical composer. Since the late 1970s, Prt has worked in a minimalist style that employs a self-made compositional technique called tintinnabuli. His music also finds its inspiration and influence from Gregorian chant.

He emigrated in 1980 with his wife and their two sons. Prt lived first in Vienna, Austria, where he took Austrian citizenship, and then re-located to Berlin, Germany. He returned to Estonia around the turn of the century and now lives in Tallinn.
