INTRODUCTION

Production management encompasses all those activities that enable conversion of a set of inputs into outputs

DIGRAMATIC REPRESENTATION OF PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

INTEGRATED PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

The set of interrelated management activities, which are involve in manufacturing certain products, is called as production management The various functions involved in production management are: Procuring the materials Moving the material for transformation Maintaining the inventories Maintaining the machines

EXAMPLES OF PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

PRODUCTION SYSTEM University INPUTS TRANSFORMATION PROCESSES Knowledge dissemination, evaluation, administration OUTPUTS

Students, lecturers, staff, facilities, labs, library

Graduates, qualified persons

Banks

Accountants, Transaction, money cashiers, exchange, accounting, equipment, tallying staff, client request

Money instruments, financial services, satisfied customers

Production management & production control

Production management typically starts with aggregate planning In aggregate planning, all inputs are meet the target such as, machinery, number of machines and their types, work force, storage space, facilities for movement and policy options like sub-contracting overtime, hiring, and laying off workers are considered

Make or Buy Decisions

Make or Buy Decisions

Matching Demand

Level Capacity

In the matching method, the production capacity is adjusted to match the forecast demand by varying the level of the work force by hiring or laying off The advantage of this method is that their will be no finished goods inventory

Production Planning
Production Planning

Estimating

Routing

Scheduling

Estimating It involves identifying the man power requirements , machine capacity and materials required to meet the planned production targets Routing It is the process of determining the sequence of operations Scheduling It fixes the priorities for various jobs and the completion of jobs at pre-set times

Production Control Function

Production control

Dispatching

Expediting

Dispatching It is concerned with setting production activities in motion Expediting its function ensures that the progress is satisfactory and the workflow is smooth

System Productivity
Output Productivity = Input

Productivity can be calculated for : A single operation A function unit A department or vision A Plant

Productivity is measure the efficiency of the system & looks at the economies achieved hiring the processes

Capital Productivity
Capital deployed in plant, machinery, buildings and the distribution systems as well as working capital are the components of the cost of manufacturing

Labour Productivity
It is measured by calculating the number of products per hour for an individual

Personnel Productivity
The term Personnel refers to people who: Facilitates the operations Checks the setups Verifies that proper jigs and fixtures are provided Inspects the allocated machines

Training
Job

descriptions are important to select, train & deploy the personnel

Any

shortfall has to be corrected & this process that we call training

purpose of training is to enhance the performance so the desired productivity is achieved is a motivating factor & thus reduces attrition & assure better performance Training is maintain the level of efficiency
