AN INVERSE APPROACH FOR PIPING NETWORKS MONITORING Abstract :

Spills and leakages of hazardous fluids from piping networks may pose a significant safety risk to population, industrial plants and the environment. Therefore in fluid distribution the problem of monitoring the network status in order to identify abnormal conditions and locate leakages arises. In the paper an inverse approach resorting to a multi-layer perceptron back-propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed, in order to locate leakages based on pressure and flow rate information.

Strategies for generating input data and for correlating by ANN such data to the fluid distribution system status are presented. A two-level architecture is selected, composed by a main ANN The branch in which the leakage occurs is identified, resorting to the ANN operating at the first level, while the specific secondlevel ANN is activated to estimate accurately the magnitude and location of the leakage in the selected branch.

The proposed methodology:

The methodology is based on two main phases Evaluation of pressure/flow rate conditions (effects) by simulation imposing the piping networks boundary conditions (causes); Correlation of effects with causes by Neural Net-works.

CONCLUSIONS

In this paper the feasibility of utilizing Artificial Neural Networks in locating leaks over a fluid distribution network, as a means of enhancing system safety. A suitable overall two-level ANN architecture is also presented where a first-level ANN determines the branch where the leak occurs and a specific second-level ANN estimates leak amount and location. The proposed architecture has been satisfactorily tested in a simplified case, obtaining promising results.

ABSTRACT:

To solve the monitoring and locating problems of the underground booster and leakage of the supply water network, a remote leakage monitoring and locating system based on GSM/GPRS is designed. The parameters of water supply pipe network, i.e., flow, flow velocity, flow direction and pressure are collected by monitor terminal. The data transmission is realized by GSM/GPRS network and the status of tap water pipe network is monitored by the GIS based Web software. Based on the feature of the underground booster and leakage of the water pipe, negative P wave and flow detecting methods is used based on the pattern recognition. Practice shows the system can detect leakage of the water pipe timely and found the leakage location accurately. At present, it has been used in practical tap water pipe network with excellent results, and it is valuable for generalization and application.

Negative P wave method:

P wave is a kind of wave propagated in pipe. Leakage causes a differential pressure of piping inner and outer, at same time, the flow descendent, and pressure dropping, as a result, negative P rises. Due to the pressure difference, both sides of flow of leakage location will stream to leakage location, the process convey to the upper reaches to downstream in turn, so we can consider it as negative P wave which propagates by a certain speed.

Fig.1 and Fig.2 separately show the negative P wave of the pipe entrance and outlet when the leakage of water supply pipe network arises. When the tube leaks, the pressure of pipe entrance will be descended rapidly to steadystate of low pressure in a short time, accordingly, the pressure of the outlet is dropped with the leakage of the water.

By measuring the propagation time and the speed of Negative P wave from one node to another, the leakage location will be determined. Fig.3 shows the principle of location. The typical location formula can be expressed as : X v*(t1t2) +[L-v*(t1t2)]/2 Here, L is the length of pipe, x is the distance from the leakage point to monitoring terminal, v is the speed t1, t2 is the time.

The application of this formula requires a constant wave. Because the density, specific heat, pressure of tap water is constant, more over, pipe and water temperature is invariant, Wave speed can be accounted constant. Obviously, wave speed varies with the temperature change from north to south. In practical engineering, we often first menstruate or amend the wave speed by the specification of the pipes and the mode of the ductwork; and the, process the data through the software analysis, so we can determine where the leakage happens.

FIG. Monitor Terminal

The terminal can detect cumulative discharge, instantaneous speed, direction of water current and reversal discharge . The detecting range of discharge is 09999999m3precision is 0.001m3; The detecting range of pressure is 06MPa,precision is 0.001 Mpa.

CONCLUSION

Leakage monitoring and locating system of tap water pipe network based on GSM/GPRS network can accomplish the leakage monitoring and location of city area, networking and it can realize low cost, high reliability which meets the need of state of the nation. At present, the system has successfully detected pipe leakage and back flow on trial. Which conduces to enhance utility of water supply enterprise.
