An ETL tool consists of three parts: Part 1: EXTRACT OLTP DSA (Data Staging Area) Part 2: TRANSFORM DSA Part 3: LOAD DSA DW

8 | FACL ETL/DBA

A Typical ETL Process

F : Files F: Full copies of tables of OLTP : Copies of tables of OLTP with current changes (deltas) F: Tables with full changed records MV: Tables with changes of Dimensions and of Fact Table (without Surrogate Keys) TDW: Tables with changes of Dimensions and of Fact Table (with Surrogate Keys)

Domains, Nodes, and Services

Domain: a collection of nodes and services Domain configuration metadata stored in a database

22 | FACL ETL/DBA

Domains
Primary unit for management and administration of services A domain contains one or more Nodes, Service Manager and Application Services. Administration Console is used to manage Domains

23 | FACL ETL/DBA

Nodes
The logical representation of a machine in a domain
Physical attributes: hostname:portnumber

At least one node in domain acts as a gateway to the domain

Only one gateway node is master at any time

Each node runs a Service Manager Node configuration stored locally in nodemetadata.xml \server\config directory by default

Application Services

25 | FACL ETL/DBA

Repository
Relational database that stores Metadata Repository Domain
Global Repository Local Repository

PowerCenter applications access the repository through the Repository Service

26 | FACL ETL/DBA

Repository Service and Process

All repository client applications access the repository database tables through the Repository Service Each Repository Service manages a single repository Repository Service process is an instance of the Repository Service that runs on a particular machine, or node.

27 | FACL ETL/DBA

Integration Service
The Integration Service reads workflow information from the repository. The Integration Service connects to the repository through the Repository Service to fetch metadata from the repository.
