Internetworking with ATM :

ATM network interfaces and architecture introduction

ATM Network Interface

Different network interfaces are :
UNI NNI AINI ATM Inter-Network Interface B-ICI B-ISDN Inter Carrier Interface DXI Data Exchange Interface FUNI Frame Based UNI FAST Frame based ATM over SONET/SDH FATE Frame based ATM over Ethernet

UNI Two variation of UNI

Private UNI
interface between ATM end-system and an ATM switch, both should lie completely within a private ATM network.

Public UNI
Provide interface for private ATM network to interface with public network.

Both public and private interface differ by

Physical interface supported Administrative control operation like traffic policing Management complexity.

NNI
Provide interface between two ATM switches. Private NNI Switches within private ATM network. Public NNI - Switches within public ATM network.

ATM Interfaces

AINI
It Facilitate internetworking of two networks running PNNI internally in disjoint PNNI routing domain. It act as Inter-domain routing protocol (like BGP). It defines the signalling procedure for dynamically establishing and clearing the ATM connections between ATM networks. It also define internetworking between AINI and PNNI.

AINI internetworking scenario

B-ICI B-ISDN Inter carrier Interface

Interface between two public ATM networks Provide interoperability between two public ATM networks belonging to different carriers. For Interoperability, agreement has been made :
ATM physical layer characteristics aspects ATM layer characteristics Traffic management and performance aspects Operation and management aspects Signalling aspects. Various PVC-based aspects.

B-ICI reference configuration

B-ICI and NNI

NNI defines the interface between two ATM switches within same public ATM network B-ICI defines interfaces between two ATM switches in two different Public ATM network B-ICI can allow both electrical and Optical media but not in NNI. B-ICI service includes:
Cell relay service (CRS) Circuit emulation service (CES) Switched Multi-megabit Data Service (SMDS)

B-ICI and NNI relationship

Multi-Service B-ICI

Conversion of service specific traffic

DXI Data Exchange Interface

Interface between frame-based devices(e.g IP based router) and ATM network elements. HSSI - High speed serial interface
Connects Workstation/router to external ATM n/w

DSU Data service unit CSU - Channel service unit

Both exchange DXI frame with each other.

DXI Data Exchange Interface

DXI mode of operation

Mode 1a processing for AAL5

Mode 1b processing for AAL3/4

DXI Mode 1a and 1b protocol architecture for AAL5

LMI
It exchange management information across the DXI. DXI LMI defines five PDU.
