A NEED TO RECYCLE
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO RECYCLE? WHY SHOULD WE REUSE ITEMS?
REUSING ITEMS ALSO EXTEND THE PRODUCTS NEED TO BE RECYCLED OR THROWED AWAY
Buy durable goods - ones that are well-built or that carry good warranties. They will last longer, save money in the long run and save landfill space. At work, make two-sided copies when ever possible
Cans and bottles Cans include steel and aluminum cans such as soup, tuna fish, vegetables, and beverage containers. Bottles include both glass and plastic. Shampoo, cooking oil, milk jugs, laundry detergent, soda and water. Recycle any plastic container with a 1 or 2 on the bottom!
Traditional Residence Halls Look for blue recycling bins in the laundry rooms, floor lounges, elevator lobbies and first floor building lobbies. Paper and newspaper containers are in building lobbies and floor lounges. Suites/Apartments Exterior recycling containers are located adjacent to dumpsters. Newspaper and mixed paper containers are found in the Community Center.
Stack the nearly 19 billion steel cans recycled in 1996 end to end, and you would have a line stretching from here to the moon and back more than three times (based on a can height of 5 inches).
Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour. Most of them are thrown away.
Five 2-liter recycled PET bottles provide enough fiberfill for a ski jacket.
Every year, we make enough plastic film to shrink-wrap the state of Texas.
The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years. To produce each weeks Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year.
We throw away enough office paper annually to build a wall twelve feet high stretching from Los Angeles to New York City.
Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper.
Glass can be recycled an infinite number of times.
A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose and even longer if its in the landfill.
The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle will operate a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.
Did you know that the state of Maryland generated enough municipal solid waste in 2000 to build a wall 3ft. wide x 6ft. high and 3,839 miles long? That is long enough to go from Baltimore to Miami over 3.5 times.
More than 20,000,000 Hersheys Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
One-third of the water used in most homes is flushed down the toilet.
E- Waste
An Indian Perspective
E-Waste
Electronic waste or e-waste is any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic appliance. E-waste includes computers, entertainment electronics, mobile phones and other items that have been E-WasteAn Indian discarded by their original Perspective users.
E-waste is growing waste problem in the world. It is a crisis of not quantity alone but also a crisis born from toxics ingredients, posing a threat to the occupational health as well as the environment. Rapid technology change, low initial cost, high obsolescence rate have resulted in a fast growing problem around the globe. Legal framework, proper collection system missing. Imports regularly coming to the recycling E-WasteAn Indian markets. Perspective Inhuman working conditions for recycling.

India, by 2008, should achieve a PC penetration of 65 per 1,000 from the existing 14 per 1,000 (MAIT) At present, India has 15 million computers. The target being 75 million computers by 2010.# Over 2 million old PCs ready for disposal in India. Life of a computer reduced from 7 years to 3-5 years . E-WasteAn Indian

E-Waste: Growth
Over 75 million current mobile users, expected to increase to 200 million by 2007 end.* Memory devices, MP3 players, iPods etc. are the newer additions. Preliminary estimates suggest that total WEEE generation in India is approximately 1,46,000 tonnes per year. #
E-Waste: Growth
Three categories of WEEE account for almost 90% of the generation:
Large Household appliances: 42.1% Information and communications: 33.9% technology equipment Consumer Electronics: E-Waste- An Indian 13.7%
Perspective
Reduces Solid Waste Stream By diverting paper to recycling processing plants instead of landfills, recycling paper whenever possible helps waste processors avoid having to build new landfills.
Minimizes Global Warming Reducing the waste stream minimizes the releases of methane and other pollutants given off by decomposing materials in landfills.
Minimizes Cutting of Fresh Timber- whole trees and other plants make up one third of the raw products used for making paper. Reducing the need for fresh trees in making paper is thus an important benefit of paper recycling.
