What is a Network?
A network is a group of interconnected computers that can
communicate with each other. Computers on a local area
network (LAN) are on the same floor or in the same
building, are directly connected to a file server and share
equipment such as printers. Wide area networks (WAN)
link computers or LANs over a greater distance. Computers
may be wired directly or wireless.

Why save to the network?

Saving to the network is like having a virtual briefcase that can go anywhere on
campus with you. When you save to the network you also back up your files,
which means if for some reason your computer crashes any work you have
saved to the server will still be there!
What is the Internet?

The internet is a worldwide collection of computer networks that serves as

a conduit for the transfer of messages and files. It is operated most
commonly from education and research institutions.

The internet is also known as the World Wide Web.

The Internet
connects us all over
the world!
What is the difference between a
Network and the Internet?
The Internet is a massive network of computers which anyone with access to an
internet connection can view. A network is available to computers set up to view
the network. You cannot view the files on our network from home because your
personal computer is not connected to the network.

Saving to your home
directory also backs
up your files!

What does backing up your files mean?

When your files are saved to your home

directory they are stored on our server, if
your computer crashes and your files are
on the server you will have access to your
files from any computer.
How NOT to lose your work!
When you begin a new document save it to your home
directory. As you continue to work on your document
save every so often by pressing Ctrl & S or clicking File
Save or clicking on the little icon of the floppy disk.
Saving your work frequently will eliminate losing your
work due to computer error.
