GARUDA

(THE GRID OF INDIA)

GARUDA
GARUDA, an initiative of Government of India was initiated in the year 2005 to connect eminent institutions and provide a common platform for collaborative research using shared Grid Computing resources

A I M

Offering high end redundant hardware and software infrastructure to provide inexpensive access to high end computational capabilities.

H O W

FIBRE

A Pan-Indian communication fabric was rolled out to provide seamless and high-speed access to resources

SPECIALY

On top of this was aggregated a range of resources including compute clusters, storage and scientific instruments; together with a range of Grid tools and services to providing an integrated infrastructure to applications and higher-level layers

GRID TOOL

SCHEDULING &RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

* The deployment of grid tools and services for GARUDA will be based on industry grade & open source components. * The Foundation phase GARUDA will be based on stable version of GT4.

* Industry grade schedulers in a hierarchical architecture. * At the cluster level, Load Leveler for AIX platforms and Torque for Linux clusters

DATA MANAGEMENT
GARUDA provides

distributed data storage architecture by deploying the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) from Nirvana SRB creates and maintains a Global Namespace across multiple heterogeneous and distributed storage systems in the Grid Access is virtualized through a single sign-on and interface through one common set of APIs.

DATA SECURITY
Data security is ensured through the following mechanisms: SRB achieves performance through parallel I/O, bulk operations, latency minimization, scalable implementation and a transaction based architecture. Data management is also automated through launch of daemons automatically on start-up.

RESOURCES

In the initial phase, the PARAM Clusters at C-DAC labs in Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai will power the Grid This provides a heterogeneous resource environment with clusters based on AIX, Solaris and Linux environments The PARAM Net system area network exports the lightweight communication protocol conforming to Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) and MPI Application Programming Interface. Around India there were 21 labs and research centres are used for this purpose

A P P L I C A T I O N S

Ethernet based High Bandwidth capacity Scalable over entire geographic area High levels of reliability Fault tolerance and redundancy Interference resilience High security Effective Network Management

APPLICATION
PARAM

Supercomputing facility is accessible for the bio-informatics research community to discover new drugs. High end resource providing technology is used to share software over grid. Gigabit speed nationwide Wide Area Network (WAN) connecting high performance computing resources and scientific instruments for seamless collaborative research and experiments.

THE REAL POWER OF GARUDA

To deliver all this, GARUDA brought together a critical mass of well-established researchers initially from 45 research laboratories and academic institutions of India, who constructed an ambitious program of activities

THE TECHNOLOGY DRIVING GARUDA

The GARUDA High-Speed network is a Layer 2/3 MPLS Virtual Private Network (VPN) connecting high speeds. The PARAM super computing provides scheduling and resource management. The Indian Grid Certification Authority(IGCA) provides X.509 certificates to support the secure environment in grid computing

FUTURE IN GARUDA
GARUDA will

demonstrate the power of the Grid by deploying select applications of national importance over the test bed. Expected to contribute resources including specialized scientific instruments Making OS sharing through grid , for the first time in the world. Ready to make online biological research centers.
