Some one needs to Lead the pack into the Sustainable Revolution - it may as well start with me

Example of Behaviour of Change Bottle Water

Barriers
Convenience of buying plastic bottles of water at work or when out Plastic bottled water has a better taste than tap water Plastic bottled water has better quality than tap water Commitment Verbal behavioral commitment was made to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles and use stainless steel bottles and refill with filtered/tap water.

Drivers
Health benefits from NOT drinking plastic bottled water Reducing cost and expenses Environmental impact

Education Bottled water

In reality bottled water is a plague on the environment and is wasteful. It takes more than three litres of water to produce one litre of bottled water, and bottled-water production (not counting transportation) consumes 17 million barrels of oil a year -- enough to fuel a million cars. More than 60% of water bottles end up in landfills or incinerators, and many of those that don't are actually shipped to India, where they're largely "down-cycled" or trashed anyway. And did you know that while bottled water costs consumers 2,000 times as much as tap water, one-third of bottled water comes from the tap anyway? So much for the mountain-spring idea.

4 Current Position we have been able to establish some benchmarking gures across a range of sustainability indicators including water and energy consumption. It helped us understand the extent of some of our key impacts, and also helped us identify other sustainability issues that we hadnt previously thought of. 5 Gap Analysis The Water Audit has provided us with a detailed understanding of our consumption levels and patterns in the production process. We have been able to identify areas that are problematic and we now realise where we need to concentrate our efforts for the biggest gain.

6 Strategy 1 Water Efficiency Strategy - will explore opportunities for more efficient water infrastructure. It will target the water consumption in the office. Strategy 2 Energy Consumption This strategy will focus on staff education to encourage all employees to play a positive role in working towards the companys energy conservation objectives. The strategy will include incentives and awards to promote. 7 Develop the Action Plan is the key planning document that describes what actions you will undertake to achieve your objectives. It identies aspects required for implementation including: Cost/benet calculations and payback periods Targets, milestones and target dates Other resources, including staff, technical expertise, external agencies Monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes 8 Implementation Integrate actions into core business processes and regular reporting cycles. This is also where you may need to develop or adjust policies and procedures for the various aspects of your business to ensure that each staff member understands their role in the business. 9 Monitoring and Review This is critical to gauge your progress towards your overall objectives. Regularly monitor using graphs and diagrams to help with the communication process. 10 Improvement Incorporate this process into the companys overall continuous improvement process.

Example of behavioural change

Making new items from recycled material saves energy and water compared to when using virgin materials. By recycling one ton of paper you save:
13 trees 2.5 barrels of oil 4100kWh of electricity 4 cubic metres of landfill 31,780 litres of water.

Bendigo Bank Case Study

Bendigo Bank had three main priorities in the brief for the new building; to provide a first class working environment for staff; to enhance the Bath Lane precinct in Bendigo; and to create a world class building regarding its environmental performance. In turn, this required careful attention to construction materials and the design of office areas to maximise natural light, comfort and wellbeing, coupled with an urban design approach ensuring that the new headquarters complements rather than dominates the cityscape. The ESD strategy aims to achieve significant performance improvements on a conventional building, while assisting in long term savings through lower running costs. It is predicted that the building will consume half the energy of a typical office building, reduce potable water use by over 50%, and allow for ease of maintenance, repair and replacement. The latter will make for a more sustainable building, with a lifespan of 80 years, thus reducing the overall environmental impact of the materials. In keeping with the Banks focus on regional community and the environment, most of the building materials were sourced from within 200km of the site. Also, they were selected for their low embodied energy, providing an overall 20% reduction in embodied energy compared to conventional construction materials. Embodied energy describes the energy required to manufacture and deliver building materials, from mining through to the construction process, and typically comprises 10-30% of the total life-cycle energy requirements of a building.

Identify the pressures that are driving your business to become more sustainable. A vision statement announces your future goals it is your compass to show the outside world where your organisation is heading. The best vision statements are short, clear and concise, realistic and have measurable outcomes.
