Located in Medium sized suburban community

Serves Large proportion of surrounding area.

Sometimes Serves beyond its capacity. Each Floor of hospital has its own particular structure

of nurses and staff. It has a formalized Hierarchy consisting of Supervisors (must be a RN), Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Students and Nurses Aides Duties are to be performed according to hospital Manual

It is the mission of Winthrop university hospital to

provide high quality, safe, culturally competitive and comprehensive health care services in a teaching and research enviornment which improve the health and well being of people.
Their enduring guiding principle is

Your health means Everything

Some Duties Of RNs were done by LPNs.

Hospital is normally very Crowded.

Nurses do the jobs of each other without thinking of

who is supposed to do and whose job it is. The procedural manual used at Winthrop was made in 1971 and has not been revised yet. Everyone is of opinion that it is outdated and actual practices vary to what is prescribed.

Even the courses that has been taught is not according

to the manual prescribed. There is a difference in Vacation Privileges between RNs and LPNs. LPNs feel Unfair and their efforts are in vein when superiors told them they saw no need to change the manual. The main problem of conflict is on the 4th Floor of the hospital. LPNs began to follow the manual strictly resulting RNs work to be overburdened. It led to wastage of time and efforts of all Doctors RNs and LPNs and brought Hostile Feeling among them.

This Conflict led to decrease in the higher degree of

care that patients were receiving. Gradually this conflict went to higher level. In manual Categories for vacation privileges were listed as Supervisors, RNs, Lab Technicians and others. LPNs were placed in other category and felt that they deserved separate category as they has same amount of training as other groups. Infact Lab Technicians got 2nd week leave after 1 year on the job. RNs were allowed to sign and LPNs had to punch in and could not hide any incidence of lateness as RNs.

RNs complained regularly about being understaffed

on every floor and every shift. Problem was mainly at nights which at times lead to mix up of treatments of patients. This led to inter-personal arguments among nurses. LPNs felt they were doing more job than RNs and worked more with Doctors and knows more about treatment than RNs. RNs argued superiority on the basis of a longer period of formal training. All these factors led to drop in morale and decrease in efficiency and created dangers of spreading on other floors.

Conflict can be understood as collision or

disagreement of opinion Conflict may be within an individualWhen there is incompatibility between his or her own goals. Conflict may be between two individualConflict occurs when individual or group have incompatible goal and try to interfere with each other as they try to attain there respective goals.

1. Functional Conflict
Refers to confrontation between two idea, and goal that improve employees and the organization performance.

2. Dysfunctional Conflict
Tear relationship apart and interfere with exchange of idea, information and resources in group and between department.

The main source of conflict was understaffing. The vacation privileges showed extreme differences for

different types of nurses. The LPNs decided to go strictly according to the manual. LPNs were placed in the other category inspite of having proper training. LPNs refused to take the Doctors orders. The Lab Technician got a second week vacation after only one year on the job. LPNs were required to punch in while RNs were allowed to sign.

It tells us that1. 2.

3.
4. 5. 6.

There is improper Utilization of Resources. Less Co-ordination among Nurses. Over burdening Of work. Wastage Of time and efforts. Unequal treatment to Nurses. Will Lead to Higher Level Of Conflict.

RNs had to do more work than they could adequately

handle while LPNs did their prescribed duty only. Less was accomplished even after putting same amount of efforts. LPNs did not take doctors order resulting in wastage of time of all the staff. The mission of the hospital was not being accomplished as degree of care towards patients had been reduced. RNs were understaffed specially at night resulting in mixing up of treatment of patients. The efficiency and morale declined to a great extent.

Firstly, Manual Need to be revised.

Ad Hoc committees should be created.

Recruitment of more RNs. LPNs should be listed in a separate category in

manual. Removal of Inequalities for reporting time.

Integrative Bargaining It operates where there exist one or more settlement that will create a win-win situation.
