ODS - Definition
An ODS is Subject Oriented Integrated Volatile Current Valued Detailed data Contains collection of data in support of an organizations need for operational, integrated, collective information.

ODS in a Warehouse
Purely an operational construct Fed by disparate applications Data transformed and integrated as passed into the ODS Integrates data within the operational environment Focus is on immediate decisions

ODS

When to go for ODS

Size for large corporations Nature of business for immediate need of information Large and messy legacy system

Benefits of ODS
The primary use of the ODS High performance, real time access of Integrated data 2/3 second response time, 24x7 availability

Benefits of ODS contd..

A secondary use of the ODS

A place to integrate data when applications are impervious to change or a place to operate on integrated data while the operational environment is being changed

Benefits of ODS contd..

ODS typically contains profile records which is made available quickly A profile record
Mary Jones - skier - programmer - single - mother of two - drives a Porsche - invests in real estate - speaks English and French - college educated - works for IBM - pays bills late - has MasterCard and VISA

Benefits of ODS contd..

The profile record is made from analysis of many other sources

Typical technologies used DB2 Oracle

Types of ODS
Commercial
Includes popular software packages eg. SAP Fed from older applications Takes long time to implement Brittle

Custom Built
- Organization builds its own ODS - No problem in fitting the organization needs

Classes of ODS

There are three basic speeds that data flows into the ODS - class I very real time (1/2 seconds or less) - class II 4/5 hours - class III overnight or greater - class IV instantaneous access to small amt of strategic information

Classes of ODS contd..

Class I is rare it is expensive and there is no time for integration eg. Class II is common it is cheap and integration can occur Class III is very common it is cheap and there is plenty of time for integration Class IV can rapidly access key strategic information while performing operational tasks

Example of Class IV

Strategic Data Stored in the ODS

ODS VS Data warehouse

ODS VS Datawarehouse contd..

ODS Construct Volatility Information Detail Focus of the decisions Operational Volatile Fresh and current Detailed Immediate Datawarehouse Informational Non volatile Rich in History Both detailed and summary Long to Medium term

ODS in new world Agreement on 2 schools of thought

Relocating the ODS

The original ODS architecture necessitated two pathways and two systems because the main data warehouse wasn't prepared to store low-level transactions

Relocating the ODS contd..

The new ODS reality. The cleaning and loading pathway needs only to be a single system because we are now prepared to build our data warehouse on the foundation of individual transactions.

Redefining the ODS

Subject Oriented Integrated Frequently Augmented Sits within the full data warehouse framework of historical data and summarized data Should be organized around a star join schema design May additionally contain back references to the legacy system Supported by extensive metadata Naturally supports a collective view of data

Inmon Vs Kimball
CIF Name Data Warehouse Definition Snapshots of data extracted from operational sources that are integrated, cleansed and loaded in a readily accessible format for strategic decision support. Bill Inmon Data Warehouse or Atomic Level Detail Ralph Kimball Staging Area or Operational Data Store

CIF Name Data Mart Definition Bill Inmon Ralph Kimball Data Warehouse (virtual) or Data Mart

A subset of data Departmental warehouse data Database or used for a Data Mart specific business function whose format may be a star schema, hypercube or statistical sample

CIF Name Operational Data Store Definition Bill Inmon Ralph Kimball None Available

An updatable Operational set of integrated Data Store operational data used for enterprise- wide tactical decision making.Contain s live data, not snapshots, and has minimal history retained.

Examples of when and when not to use an ODS

Good Application of an ODS : - Subject-area reporting - Functional integration

Bad Application of an ODS : - Single source for all data warehouse data - The operational data store is used as a departmentspecific application.
