Electricity Generation World Facts

By itself, electricity is an exceptionally clean form of energy but It is to be consider that how it is generated. Today, worldwide, about 70% electricity is produced from fossil fuels (about 50% from coal, and 20% from natural gas).

Nuclear power accounts for another 20%, leaving about 10% coming from renewable resources like wind, water and solar.

HOW HYDROPOWER WORKS

Driven by the sun, water circulates throughout the earth through evaporation and precipitation. In this hydrologic cycle, water evaporates from lakes and oceans, forms clouds, falls to the ground as rain or snow, then finds its way back to the ocean.

Inside Hydropower Plant

Hydropower facilities generate electricity by utilizing the energy of falling water. Hydroelectric plants can be built along rivers, streams, or canals, but dams are necessary for a reliable water supply. A dam creates a reservoir that stores water which can be released depending on the demand for electricity.

HOW COAL POWER WORKS

In this process electricity generated by the means of burning fossil fuel and coal occurs when they are burned at high temperature in a furnace that is known as the boiler. Water is release through the system in series of pipes, which is heated at extreme pressure and temperature to produce steam. At this stage, the high-pressurized steam produce.
This process caused the fan to spin at high speed at approximate 1,500 mph, which in turn caused a magnet within the rotor to produce electricity. Now that the electricity is produced, it moves from the power plant through a system of transmission into our homes, offices and devices. All alone this linear system of electricity production, about 20-30% of the total energy produced is lost in the form of heat energy

2. Hydroelectric power plants with accumulation reservoirs offer incomparable operational flexibility, since they can immediately respond to fluctuations in the demand for electricity.
The flexibility and storage capacity of hydroelectric power plants make them more efficient and economical in supporting the use of intermittent sources of renewable energy, such as solar energy or Aeolian energy.

3. River water is a domestic resource which, contrary to fuel or natural gas, is not subject to market fluctuations.
In addition to this, it is the only large renewable source of electricity and its costbenefit ratio, efficiency, flexibility and reliability assist in optimizing the use of thermal power plants.

4. The hydroelectric life cycle produces very small amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG). In emitting less GHG than power plants driven by gas, coal or oil, hydroelectricity can help retard global warming. Although only 33% of the available hydroelectric potential has been developed, today hydroelectricity prevents the emission of GHG corresponding to the burning of 4.4 million barrels of petroleum per day worldwide.

5. Hydroelectric power plants don't release pollutants into the air. They very frequently substitute the generation from fossil fuels, thus reducing acid rain and smog.
In addition to this, hydroelectric developments don't generate toxic by products.

Cons of Non-renewable (Coal Power) Energy

1. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (Co2), a powerful greenhouse gas, that had been stored in the earth for millions of years, contributing to global warming. It leaves behind harmful byproducts upon combustion, thereby causing a lot of pollution. Mining of coal leads to irreversible damage to the adjoining environment.

Cons of Non-renewable (Coal Power) Energy

2. It is Nonrenewable and fast depleting. High coal transportation costs, especially for countries with no coal resources and hence will require special harbors for coal import and storage. Coal storage cost is high especially if required to have enough stock for few years to assure power production availability.

Cons of Non-renewable (Coal Power) Energy

3. An average of 170 pounds of mercury is made by one coal plant every year. When 1/70 of a teaspoon of mercury is put in to a 50-acre lake it can make the fish unsafe to eat.

Cons of Non-renewable (Coal Power) Energy

4. A coal plant creates 720 tons of carbon monoxide; which causes headaches and place additional stress on people with heart disease.
A 500-megawatt coal fired plant draws about 2.2 billion gallons of water from nearby bodies of water. This is enough water to support approximately 250,000 people.

Cons of Non-renewable (Coal Power) Energy

5. Coal is cheap and abundant, with an estimate of over 300 years supply of economic coal deposits still accessible, which is why we are still using so much of it, despite the high levels of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions it produces.
In the US, studies have revealed that nearly 24,000 early deaths were reported due to the harmful emissions from coal-fired power plants. Causes of deaths include lung cancer, asthma attacks, and heart attacks.
