CHAPTER 13 & 14

Prepared by: TAN SHIN HOOI OO WOEI TIAN PPISMP SEM 2 AMBILAN JUN 2011

Holden walks forty-one blocks back to his hotel.

He wishes he had his gloves, which were stolen at Pencey. He imagines finding the thief, but then decides hes too cowardly for direct confrontations. In the hotel, the elevator operator, Maurice, offers to send a prostitute to his room for five dollars.

Holden accepts, but immediately regrets it. Hes a virgin and thinks that he isnt aggressive enough to get girls, but also says he feels sorry for girls because they are so dumb, which stops him from going all the way.

A young prostitute, Sunny, arrives. Holden tries to talk to her, but she just undresses, sits on his lap, and talks dirty.
Holden tells her he cant have sex because of a recent operation on his clavichord.

Holden pays Sunny five dollars, but she claims he owes her ten. He refuses. She leaves angrily, making him more depressed.

Holden, alone, remembers a time when he excluded Allie from a game.

He still feels guilty about it. He gets into bed, and is surprised that he feels like praying.

He says hes sort of an atheist, and dislikes ministers because they speak in a phony tone of voice.

Maurice demands five dollars, and pins Holden while Sunny takes the money from Holdens wallet. When Holden calls Maurice a dirty moron, Maurice punches him in the stomach, leaving him crying on the floor.
Holden images himself as a movie star shot in the gut by an enemy, and imagines taking his revenge. He then says he feels like committing suicide by jumping out the window. Eventually, he goes to sleep.

PLACE Edmont Hotel: The seedy hotel where Holden spends an eventful night. Here he meets some women in the hotel bar and is visited by a prostitute.

SETTING

TIME At night: Holden, who's tired of taxi cabs, walks all forty-one blocks back to his hotel. In the elevator, Holden agrees to let the elevator operator get him a prostitute. he finally tells the prostitute that he is unable to have sex because he is recovering from an operation on his "clavichord."

Characters
Maurice The elevator man at the Edmond Hotel who is also a pimp. He assaults Holden after he refuses to pay a tendollar fee to the prostitute he has arranged for Holden. Maurice told Holden the charge would only be five dollars, but he later cheats him on the price. pummeling Holden after the boy argues for the original price.

Sunny A teenage prostitute who Holden sees at the Edmont Hotel. Shallow, uneducated, and all-business. Sunny demands a ten-dollar payment, but Holden had been led to believe that the charge would only be five. She calls him "crum-bum. Raymond Goldfarb Holden's friend at the Whooton School. They got drunk together once in chapel. Raymond got very drunk but Holden only got very cool and nonchalant.

Bobby Fallon Holden's friend in Maine when he was younger. One day, Holden refused to take Allie with him to Bobby Fallon's house because Allie was just a child.

Arthur Childs Classmate at the Whooton School. He and Holden talked about the Bible. They disagreed.

Theme
Empathy Holden's empathy works against him in fistfights. He's unable to disengage with the real humanity shown on the other guy's face and as a result can't mindlessly attack.

"I hate fist fights. I don't mind getting hit so much- - although I'm not crazy about it, naturally - but what scares me most in a fist fight is the guy's face. I can't stand looking at the other guy's face, is my trouble. It wouldn't be so bad if you could both be blindfolded or something. It's a funny kind of yellowness, when you come to think of it, but it's yellowness, all right. I'm not kidding myself." Chapter 13, pg. 94

Phonies When Holden sees the faces of boys he fights and of Sunny, the prostitute, both are disturbing. So in a way, he's in a tough spot. He can't deal with the phoniness that masks humanity, but he can't deal with looking at this humanity straight on, either.
Holden pays Sunny five dollars, but she claims he owes her ten. He refuses. She leaves angrily, making him more depressed. Instead of protecting Holden, the adult world tries to exploit him.

Innocence Holden reveals his sexual innocence by blurting out that he's a virgin during his description of his encounter with Sunny, the prostitute. He's quite frank about this, as if he'd rather just get it off his chest than pretend to experience he doesn't have.

Lies and Imagination A big part of Holden's trouble with movies is that they pollute peoples' imaginations. Holden seems to feel this is happening to him when he feels compelled to act like a movie character, gripping his side as if he's been shot, for example.

Holden images himself as a movie star shot in the gut by an enemy, and imagines taking his revenge. He then says he feels like committing suicide by jumping out the window. Eventually, he goes to sleep.

Moral Values
We must take care of ourselves. We must take care of our health by not drinking so much of beer or wine that harmful to our body. Holden could drink all night and not even showed it if he was in the mood. But after he drank a pint of Scotch, he puked before he went to bed although he didnt have to do so.

We cannot casually having sex encounters with others. Holden agrees to let the elevator operator get him a prostitute. He tries to strengthen his resolve by telling himself that the prostitute will be good practice if he ever decides to marry. Instantly he regrets his decision since he is a virgin. He tells the prostitute that he is unable to have sex because he is recovering from an operation on his "clavichord."

We must believe in God and accept everything about Him. He says, "I like Jesus and all, but I dont care too much for most of the other stuff in the Bible". What Holden really dislikes is the preaching of religious texts and their teachers. He believes that Jesus is generous and forgiving, and that he would have forgiven even Judas.

We must maintained our dignity As he threatens Maurice, he feels weak, and his voice is shaking, but he feels if he were wearing clothes, at least he could have maintained a certain amount of dignity. It is for the same reason that he would have "given anything" to not have started crying in front of them.

It is important to act rationally . There is a need for us to find solutions to problems by thinking rationally and practically. When he is walking in the cold, he comments that someone at Pencey probably stole his gloves. He imagines what he would have said if he had caught the thief. Then he is honest with himself and admits he would probably say very little since he is a coward at heart. Rather than punch the thief and accuse him openly, Holden says he would have attacked him with sarcasm.

It is important to appreciate the gift of life. As humans we have a moral obligation to protect life and not to end it by committing suicide. Holden imagines killing himself by jumping out the window to the street below, but he cannot bear the thought of lying dead on the streets with a crowd of people gathering to look at his body. If he could only be sure somebody would cover him up as soon as he landed, he might consider it. In the end, he accepts reality and acknowledges there is no escape from the pain and misery of his existence.

POINT OF VIEW
It is narrated in the first-person by the protagonist, Holden Caulfield. It's no fun to be yellow. Maybe I'm not all yellow. I don't know. I think maybe I'm just partly yellow and partly the type that doesn't give much of a damn if they lose their gloves.
