According to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning. An information literate individual is able to:
Determine the extent of information needed Access the needed information effectively and efficiently Evaluate information and its sources critically Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
Exemplary achievement Effectively defines the scope of information needed, identifying types of sources that meet the purpose of the research. Consistently uses effective search strategies to efficiently find useful information from appropriate sources. Thoroughly analyzes information and sources as appropriate for the purpose of the research for issues such as relevance, bias, accuracy, currency, and authority. Skillfully organizes, synthesizes, and communicates information from sources with clarity and depth in a distinct voice.
Sufficient achievement Adequately defines the scope of information needed, identifying appropriate types of sources for the purpose of the research. Generally uses effective search strategies to find relevant information from acceptable sources. Sufficiently analyzes information and source as appropriate for the purpose of the research for issues such as relevance, bias, accuracy, currency, and authority. Adequately organizes, synthesizes, and communicates information from sources in an individual voice.
Insufficient achievement Does not define the scope of research adequately and/or identifies inappropriate types of sources. Uses ineffective search strategies resulting in irrelevant information or inappropriate sources. Inadequate analysis results in sources and/or information that is irrelevant, biased, inaccurate, out of currency, or lacking authority. Information is disorganized, unclear, or inappropriately based on the style or diction of sources.
