Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem [all living organisms and non living factors ] .
A pollutant is a waste material that pollutes air, water or soil. Different kinds of pollution are found: 1. Air Pollution. 2. Water Pollution. 3. Land Pollution or Soil contamination .

An air pollutant is a substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment. Pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. Air pollution comes from both natural and man made sources. The major sources of air pollution are : 1. Power and heat generation (Example : use of water as a coolant by power plants and industrial manufacturers ) . 2. The burning of solid wastes. 3. Industrial processes. 4. Transportation.

1. Combustion of Coal:
The combustion of coal without special precautions may lead to death. 2. Car exhausts 3. Tobacco Smoke 4. Acid rain Sulfur and nitrogen dioxides combine with atmospheric moisture to produce highly acidic rain, snow, hail, or fog. Rain and snow mainly acidify the soil and ground water.

Examples of Water Pollution: 1. Industrial wastes This waste water may contain acids, alkalis, salts, poisons, oils and in some cases harmful bacteria. 2. Mining and Agricultural Wastes. Gold and coal mines, are responsible for large quantities of acid water. Agricultural pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides , and farm wastes may wash into rivers .
3. Sewage Disposal and Domestic Wastes They pollute rivers and dams.
It includes visible waste as well as pollution of the soil itself. Soil pollution is mainly due to chemicals in herbicides (weed killers) and pesticides (poisons which kill insects and other invertebrate pests).
Litter is waste material dumped in public places such as streets, parks, picnic areas, at bus stops and near shops.

Biogeochemical Cycle
The cycling of chemical elements required by life between the living and nonliving parts of the environment. Some examples of these chemical elements are H2O, P, S, N2, O2 and C. Or biogeochemical cycles are the transport and transformation of substances through the Earth system. These elements cycle in either a gas cycle or a sedimentary cycle; some cycle as both a gas and sediment.

In a gas cycle elements move through the atmosphere. Main reservoirs are the atmosphere and the ocean. In a sedimentary cycle elements move from land to water to sediment. Main reservoirs are the soil and sedimentary rocks. Gas Cycles: Carbon Nitrogen Oxygen Sedimentary Cycles: Phosphorus Sulfur
