What is mass????
Mass is the amount of matter in an object and a measure of the force needed to accelerate it. Mass usually can be measured in kilograms (kg) and grams (g).

Remember this!!! 1 kg = 1000 g 1000 g = 1 kg

Lets us get to know how the weighing scale are look like

Ancient weighing scale.

Modern weighing scale.

Electronic weighing scale.

How to read the weighing scale

There are two types of weighing scale to weight mass which are in kilograms (kg) and grams (g).
We can measure mass in kilograms (kg) and grams (g)

In kilograms (kg)

In grams (g)

Mark

1 kg = 1000 g There are 2 marking in the scale.

1000 500 2
This weighing scale use to weight objects in kilograms. Based from the picture, we can see the are 2 marking in the scale. Each mark is 500g.

Mark

1 kg = 1000 g There are 4 marking in the scale.

1000 250 4

This is the same weighing scale. But, based from the picture, we can see the are 4 marking in the scale. Each mark is 250g.

Mark

1 kg = 1000 g There are 4 marking in the scale.

1000 200 5

This is the same weighing scale. But, based from the picture, we can see the are 5 marking in the scale. Each mark is 200g.

Mark

1 kg = 1000 g There are 5 marking in the scale.

250 50 5

This weighing scale use to weight objects in grams (g). Based from the picture, we can see the are 5 marking in the scale. Each mark is 50 g.

To read the scale, we must make sure the weighing scale needle pointed at zero 0. Then, we must properly read the scale pointed by the needle. Our eyes must be parallel with the needle of the weighing scale. This is because we can avoid from error in reading the mass of the objects

Lets work it out!!!

Try to read the scale.

The sugar has a mass of 1.5kg. What is the mass of the sugar in grams?

grams

1.5 kg =

1.5 kg = 1 kg + 0.5 kg = 1000 kg + 500 g = 1500 g 1.5 kg = 1500 g

1 kg = 1000 g 0.5 kg = ? g 0.5 x 1000 g = 500 g 0.5 kg = 500 g

600 g = 0.6 kg

3600 g = 3000 g + 600 g = 3 kg + 0.6 kg = 3.6 kg 3600 g = 3.6 kg 1000 g = 1 kg 3000 g = 3 kg

Problem solving
Example 1 An empty basket weights 800 g. Johan puts 4 kg 320 g of fruits into the basket. What is the total mass of the basket and the fruits? What is given ? What is ask for? What operation is needed?
Mass of basket Mass of fruits = 800 g = 4 kg 320 g

Total Mass Addition (+)

Solve

4 kg 320 g + 800 g =
4 kg 320 g + 800 g 5 kg 120 g

kg

320 g + 800 g = 1120 g Regroup 1120 g to 1 kg 120 g

Check
5 kg 120 g + 800 g 4 kg 320 g

Regroup 1 kg to 1000 g 1000 g + 120 g = 1120 g

4 kg 320 g + 800 g = 5 kg 120 g The total mass is 5 kg 120 g.

Lets work it out!!!

1. A shopkeeper bought 5.4 kg of onions. He packed them into six packets. What is the mass of each packet of onions? 2. Dr. John checked Luqmans mass. It was 38.5 kg last month. Now he weight 40.3 kg. How much mass that he gained in grams.

Thank you! I hope all of you will understand this topic. See you next time!!!!! Good luck!!!
