WHICH THEORIES ADVOCATE THESE PRINCIPLES?

Do as you would be done by. Respect other people. Do no harm. Take responsibility for your actions. Concentrate on making yourself a better person. Do what you know is right.

WHICH THEORIES ADVOCATE THESE PRINCIPLES?

Look after other people to the best of your ability. Dont be mean. Share some of what you have. Be good to other people. Dont use people for your own benefit. Dont make other people do things they dont want to.

COMPLICATIONS
These principles work mostly at a personal level. Applying these principles more broadly is when they become more complex. What should you do when you are positions of power? Knowledge, awareness, motive, understanding are important.

EXAM PREPARATION

THE STRUCTURE OF THE EXAM WILL BE AS FOLLOWS: THREE PARTS

Part 1 is COMPULSORY (10%) Part 2 is COMPULSORY (10%) Part 3 is COMPULSORY (20%)

EXAM PREPARATION
PART 1 10% You will have to answer questions related to the following reading:

Peter Singers article All Animals are Equal

The reading is available for you to download through AUTonline.

While the questions are based on this reading, you will have to do your own extensive research on animal ethics.

Brainstorm possible questions and write mock answers in essay format.

EXAM PREPARATION

PART 2 10% This question will be just like your essay. The exam will contain a newspaper article on an ethical issue and you will have to identify the ethical issues and use TWO ethical theories to explore ways in which different courses of action could be justified. The article will focus on Richard Bransons views on drug decriminalisation.
You might like to read Michael Huemers Americas Unjust Drug War. The reading is available for you to download through AUTonline. It is under the title Rachels, J. and Rachels, S. Americans Unjust Drug War. As practice, randomly select a newspaper article and see how well you can write an essay on it in say 45 minutes.

EXAM PREPARATION

PART 3 20% You will need to compare and contrast TWO of the theories we have covered this semester. The theories you choose must be different to the two theories you discussed in Part 2. You will then have to apply the two theories to an ethical dilemma. You may choose theories from the following:

Kantian ethics Utilitarianism Social Contract Theory Virtue ethics Maori ethics Ethics of Care Theories of Justice and Distribution Social Responsibility Just War theory

PREPARATION
Know at least 4 theories very well, and one more. Do the required readings, go over the lecture notes, find some additional sources. Read, think, read, think. Try writing summaries of the readings to see how much you have understood. Make up your own question and write a mock exam answer: see how much you can write in 50 minutes. Make sure you know the readings inside out. Form a study group.

EXAM HINTS
Look closely at what the question is asking: dont just write everything you know on the topic answer the question. Make sure you allocate time wisely (spend more time on the 20% question than the 10%). At least try to answer every question. Check out past exams (Basic Search, keyword ethics):

But remember as we change the topics each year this will just give you a basic idea.
