Role-Based Access Control

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is a mechanism for managing a set of actions (capabilities) that a user or administrator can perform on a storage system. A role is created. Capabilities are granted to the role. Groups are assigned to one or more roles. Users are assigned to groups.

Aggregates
Represent the physical storage Made up of one or more RAID groups A RAID group:
One or more data disks Parity disks
RAID 4 has only one parity disk RAID-DP has two parity disks Data is striped for parity protection

Volumes are allocated space from an aggregate

How Aggregates and FlexVol Volumes Work

FlexVol 1 FlexVol 2 FlexVol 3

Create RAID Groups Create aggregate

RAID groups are created as result

vol1

vol2 vol3

Create FlexVol 1
Only metadata space is used There is no preallocation of blocks to a specific volume

Aggregate RG1 RG2 RG3

Create FlexVol 2
RG1 RG2 RG3 Aggregate

WAFL allocates aggregate space as data is written

How Snapshot Works

Active Data
File X

Snapshot
File X

Disk Blocks

Active version of X is now composed of blocks A, B, C Snapshot version of X remains composed of blocks A, B, C Atomically moves active data to new consistent state

Qtrees
A qtree is a logically defined file system that exists as a special subdirectory at the root of a volume. Qtrees allow:
Partitioning of data within a volume Special quota requirements

Limitation
The maximum number of qtrees per volume is 4,995
