Todays Marketplace: Baby Cellphone Apps

Best Baby Apps Got restless toddler syndrome? These apps will amuse and educate.
By Kate Silver from Parents Magazine

Smartphones don't make smart babies The American Academy of Pediatrics discourages any electronic "screen time" for infants and toddlers under 2, while older children should be limited to one to two hours a day.

Push-back from the AAP

Urged the FCC to review its exposure limits adopted in 1996: The AAP believes the inquiry to reassess the radiation standard presents an opportunity to review its impacts on childrens health and well-being. In the past, such standards have generally been based on the impact of exposure on an adult male. Children, however, are not little adults and are disproportionately impacted by all environmental exposures, including cell phone radiation. In fact, according to IARC, when used by children, the average RF energy deposition is two times higher in the brain and 10 times higher in the bone marrow of the skull, compared with mobile phone use by adults.

Existing Exposure Limits

Based on a very large man (97% of the population is smaller) with only one tissue type in his head
Anyone smaller absorbs more microwave radiation

Assumes only biological effect is heating

Thousand of papers report biological effect without heating

Devices held immediately again the head or body

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) The absorbed microwave radiation in tissues
Peak SAR <1.6 Watts per kilogram (W/kg) for any 1 gram of tissue averaged over 30 minutes

Devices far away (e.g., cell towers, Wi-Fi)

Whole-body Specific Absorption Rate (SARwb)
Peak SARwb <0.08 W/kg averaged over 30 minutes Brain, female breast, salivary gland in cheek, allowed to absorb 20-times more radiation than whole body!

Exposure Limits Issues

Europe and many other countries
International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP)
Industry-funded, self-perpetuating, non-governmental organization without medical or public health expertise, responsible to no government Peak SAR=2W/kg averaged for any 10 grams of tissue averaged over 30 minutes Relative to U.S., ICNIRP allows more than 3 times the absorption of microwave radiation FCC pushing to harmonize exposure standard to ICNRIP

Impact on Exposure Limits:

Study of young children with various weights of tissues

Research funded by Environmental Health Trust

FCC Approved Cellphone Certification

Industry-design process
Exclusive used
Pour liquid into mannequin
Assumes interior of head is a single tissue

Robotic arm inside head measures absorbed radiation Phone is certified to meet exposure limit

Smaller heads will absorb greater radiation

Childrens tissues absorb double to 10 times the radiation compared to an adult

What About the Science?

Two examples, there is a many additional studies

An independent Swedish team found when cellphone or cordless phone use began as a teenager there was a significant* 8-fold increased risk of brain cancer [1]
In comparison adults had a 2-fold risk of brain cancer

An industry-funded European team found more than a doubled significant greater than doubled risk of brain cancer after more than 2.8 years of use in children aged 719 (median age 13) and 99.9% significant trend that the risk increases with increasing years since first use [2]
Conclusion The absence of an exposureresponse relationship either in terms of the amount of mobile phone use or by localization of the brain tumor argues against a causal association.
* Significant means statistically significant, equivalent to a >95% confidence level

Identified Risks to Date

Strong evidence, multiple studies
Brain cancer Hearing nerve tumor (acoustic neuroma) Cheek salivary (parotid) gland Female breast cancer Leukemia Male fertility
Reduced sperm counts Sperm DNA fragmentation

Weaker evidence
Meningioma Testicular cancer Eye cancer

What About Cell & Cordless Phones, Wi-Fi?

Cellphones
All have warnings about not keeping them against your head and body
Nokia : This product meets RF exposure guidelineswhen positioned at least 1.5 cm (~1/4 inch) away from the body Motorola keep the mobile device and its antenna at least 2.5 [cm] (1 inch) from your body. Image courtesy of Dr. Devra Davis BlackBerry keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 in. (25 mm) from your body (including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers)

What About Cell & Cordless Phones, Wi-Fi?

iPhone
Go to Settings > General > About > Legal > RF Exposure
Would any interested customer be able to find this? Can some read what it says?

Cordless phone
Same risk as cellphones Base station (where handset sits)
Transmits 24/7 Do not keep anywhere close to a bed
Unplug at night (there is no power switch)

Wi-Fi Routers
Locate as far away from where occupants will be
Unplug at night (there is no power switch)

What About iPads, Tablets , & Laptops?

FCC exposure limits applicable only at 20 cm (~8 inches)
At 4 inches, may exceed limit by a factor of 4 At 2 inches, may exceed limit by a factor of 16 At 1 inch may exceed limit by a factor of 64 At inch may exceed limit by a factor of 256
