DEFINITION OF TERMS

refers to a group of people who share biologic similarities such as skin colour, bone structure, and genetic traits.

is a social identity that is associated with shared behaviours and patterns. These include family structure, religious affiliation, ancestry or national origin, language, dress, foods and eating habits, and health behaviours.

is a term used to describe that assuming all members of the group have the same characteristics.

is the process by which people adapt to a new cultural norm.

Cultural

diversity is the quality of diverse or different cultures. It is referred to as having different cultures respect each others differences and that the variety of human societies or cultures in a specific region, or in the world as a whole.

IMPACT OF CULTURE ON FAMILY STRUCTURE

ASIAN

Asian families were predominantly extended and usually hierarchical in nature with males and older individuals occupying a higher status.

AMERICAN

Nuclear family concept holds a special place in the mindset of Americans but it is single-parent families, childless or childfree couples and fused families which now constitute the majority of families.

HISPANIC/ LATIN AMERICAN

The family structure is that of extended family. Obligations toward all family members is expected and accepted as an important role to be fulfilled by all members.

EUROPEAN

European family has many similarities of that of the Americans.
