WHO WE ARE
A non-profit organization, IEEE is the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. The IEEE name was originally an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
Today, the organization's scope of interest has expanded into so many related fields, that it is simply referred to by the letters I-E-E-E (pronounced Eye-triple-E) IEEE members worldwide some 385,808 members in 163 countries at the end of July of 2012
Our History
AIEE (1884)
Founded by American industrialists to develop a skilled workforce; prepare standards for U.S. electrical industries
IRE (1912)
Founded by radio electronics pioneers Did not feel fully at home in electric poweroriented AIEE Differed from the AIEE - positioned at inception to be global
In 1963 AIEE & IRE combine to form Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
IEEE Today
The worlds largest professional society dedicated to the advancement of technology Creating a level playing field for technical professionals regardless of geography Enabling technical professionals to distinguish themselves in a globally competitive environment Promoting the public understanding and appreciation of engineering
Engineering is an honored profession IEEE member contributions improve the quality of life and make the world a better place
