Rehabilitation: [1] High Line Elevated Park


A 1.5 mile long urban park built on an elevated rail system in New York. Designed by: James Corner Field Operations.

The rail system: 1930

High Line Elevated Park


The rail stopped working on 1980
1999: was planned to be demolished.

Instead it was planned for renovation by the Friends of the High Line
1980-2000: naturally grew plants and grass

Kept plants and grass Paving system on some parts for pedestrian walking. Additional stairs for access. Chairs and light fixtures

It was closed since 1989, because of an earthquake


Rebuilt 2008, keeping many of the walls and structure system.

Area: 400,000 m2
Currently: academy, research, museum, and exhibition center

the African Hall was kept almost as it is since it was beloved by people.

Originally: 100 year old brick shell hardware store.

Type: Library
The existing brick structure was kept as it was greatly desired by the community, not for its architectural value.

Aside from the interior, the designer also changed all the windows and the main entrance.
A new load-bearing steel plate and glass curtain was added to help people see the book-shelves from outside.

More than 75,000 m2 without any supporting structure in the middle

Some of the steel skin was replaced with transparent film to let daylight in.

It contains the biggest indoor rainforest in the world, a beach, and tropical plants.

Slide towers up to 27 meters in height are provided inside.

Buildings inside the dome: lodges and guest rooms.

The purified water fro the pool is used to water plants.

Over a century old cement factory. Contains very large engine rooms. It was abandoned for years.

Current building:
Mixed residential and office headquarters. Project completed in 2 years Architect: Richard Bofill Currently: Richard Bofill Architecture firm H.Q.

Repair and refurbish beams, uprights, and wire decking. They refurbished units are less than 60% the cost of new ones.
