Techniques of Teaching

Modern math teaching methodology offers various possibilities for solving the problem of involving students in independent and research work, it develops their problem solving skills and develops their creative thinking processes and skills.

Some of the techniques which can be used effectively used for

teaching of mathematics are oral work, homework, assignments,

self study, group work, supervised study etc.

Drill in Mathematics What is a drill??

Drill and practice is a technique of instruction in teaching method. This technique is absolutely necessary for the memorization of math facts. Drill is a way to revise a lesson that has already been taught. i.e. it is a means to strengthen the knowledge already acquired. Drill work is based on principle of learning by doing and on the law of exercises. A child is taught a specific skill. This is followed by page after page of similar problems in the hope that the child will memorize the facts. The child practices this same skill over and over again for many days. However, the number of similar problems is reduced as time goes on. Used in small doses, drill can be effective and valuable.

Importance of Drill
Most effective means of fixing the impression of

learned facts in mind. Helps in development of communicational skills. Such skills are quite helpful in learning of algebra, arithmetic and geometry Sense of achievement and confidence and so it provides a positive stimulus for further learning. Helps in developing speed and accuracy in learning of Mathematics. Drill is quite helpful in revision and interview work. Drill provides an opportunity to the student to work independently.

Advantages of Drill
Motivating

Provides immediate feedback

Individualized practice

Student can work at own pace

Increases acquisition and fluency of basic skills Strengthening the knowledge of students Helps the teacher to know the weakness of the students and

provide individual attention to them

Disadvantages of Drill
Many are poorly designed, which jeopardise the interest of

the students in subject

Limited uses Can lead to boredom through repetition Does not promote higher level thinking

Precautions in regard to Drill and exercises

Drill work should be properly planned
Drill work should follow understanding Drill work should not be boring Drill work should be meaningful Drill work should be based on the topic taught Drill work should be moderate and not to be continued for long time. Drill work should be properly supervised. Drill work should not be given as punishment The achievements of learner should be evaluated frequently.

CONCLUSION
A math teacher need not be a scientist in order to appropriately and adequately apply the science principle and scientific methods in teaching. This occurs in math teaching without much interference. Solving a math problem implies some research and development. That is why the teacher has to create the spirit of curiosity in his students, the inclination for independent mental work and to show them ways to new discoveries. A creative math teacher using creative teaching methods has great chances to develop in his students creative characteristics.
