Then came the mega telescope..

Hubble space telescope

Proposal for space telescope

Ground based telescopes were effected by climatic changes. Turbulence in earths atmosphere was also a hindrance for quality space observation Astronomers wanted to take the space observation to a next level

All this lead to the proposal for a space telescope.in 1970 NASA took LST as a major goal

Funding..

The US Congress questioned many aspects of the proposed

budget. Many astronomers met congrsssmen and senators in person.

Funding issues led NASA to collaborate with European Space

Agency.ESA provided first generation instruments and solar cells in return for European astronomers being guaranteed at least 15% of the observing time on the telescope.
Congress eventually approved funding of US $36,000,000

And finally the construction of large space telescope started...

Marshall Space Flight Center(MSFC) was given

responsibility for the design, development, and construction of the telescope

company Perkin-Elmer to design and build the Optical

Telescope Assembly (OTA) and Fine Guidance Sensors for the space telescope
Lockheed was commissioned to construct and integrate

the spacecraft in which the telescope would be housed

Goddard Space Flight Center was given overall control of

the scientific instruments and ground-control center for the mission

Launching..

 By early 1986, the planned launch date of October that year

looked feasible, but the Challenger accident brought the U.S. space program to a halt purged with nitrogen, until a launch could be rescheduled. This costly situation (about $6 million per month) pushed the overall costs of the project even higher. Shuttle program which launched the Hubble Space Telescope astronomical observatory into Earth orbit. The mission used the Space Shuttle Discovery which lifted off from Launch Pad 39B on 24 April 1990 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

Hubble in trouble

Within weeks of the launch of the telescope, the returned

images showed there was a serious problem with the optical system
Hubble failed to achieve a final sharp focus and the best

image quality obtained was drastically lower than expected.

Analysis of the flawed images showed that the cause of the

problem was that the primary mirror had been ground to the wrong shape
The optics company Perkin-Elme was criticized and

blamed for the carelessness

Hubble was in need of spectales!!!

The Space Shuttle Endeavour mission STS-61 took place in December 1993, and involved installation of several instruments and other equipment over a total of 10 days.

Observation of the collision of Comet Shoemaker-Levy

9 with Jupiter in 1994 gave the idea about comet-planet collisions

While Hubble helped to refine estimates of the age of the

universe, it also cast doubt on theories about its future

Hubble fell many times ill and everytime it was given treatment and cured.

 Maintaining Hubble forever and ever in sapce reqires servicing

missions
repairing of complicated instruments and sensors in space is a

tricky job
So,Hubble cant last long in its orbit
Hubble can be de-orbitted safely using space shuttle but it is

tricky and very risky mission,so NASA is hesitating for safe deorbiting missions.
Finally NASA has decided that Hubble wont retire but it will die

because its difficult to maintain it in space and it is also difficult to bring it back.
