INTRODUCTION
A gas insulated substation is an electrical substation in which the major structures are contained in a sealed environment with sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) as the insulating medium. Gas insulated substations originated in Japan. Gas insulated substation mainly used for a power transmission system.

GIS - SUBSTATION
Small installation size Protection against atmospheric pollution Noiseless operation Non-explosive Reduced maintenance Totally enclosed substations using SF6 gas as insulation that are also known as GIS

SF6 AN OVERVIEW
SF6 is Sulphur hexafluoride Formed by chemical reaction

sulphur and fluorine. Electro-negative gas It is colourless, odourless, nonflammable, non-corrosive and chemically stable. High dielectric strength. Excellent cooling properties. Good thermal conductivity and excellent thermal stability. Its not poisonous and eco-friendly.

USAGE

Gas insulated substation mainly used for a power transmission system or a substation system. The equipment can be designed for any bus scheme.

LAY OUT OF GIS

GAS INSULATED TRANSFORMER

First units produced in 1967 Use SF6 Gas as the insulating and cooling medium instead of insulating oil. Primarily used in substations located in urban areas (including inside buildings, underground). Distribution class units up to 400 MVA, 345 kV.

GAS INSULATED SWITCH GEAR

Provides high degree of operational reliability The space occupied by switch gear is greatly reduced Totally unaffected by atmospheric conditions Easier to install in difficult site conditions

GAS INSULATED SHUNT REACTOR

Suitable for installation Excellent history of reliability and safety Fine radial core Circular yoke and circular tank Low loss

SF6 CIRCUIT BREAKER

Arc quenching medium is SF6 SF6 is electro-negative Tendency to absorb free electrons in arc Quickly build up high insulation structure Use in high power high voltage service Provide noiseless operation Inflammable at operation

Comparison b\w GIS & AIS

14

ADVANTAGES
GIS have no risks for fire & explosion due to leakage of oil They generate no noise & have no radio interference It offer solutions including - In industrial areas where space & pollution problems - Mountain areas where ice & snow are major problems Reduced assembly times

15

Contd.
Located closure to load centers there by reducing transmission & distribution Reduced required space Reduced maintenance and cost The safety is increased

16

DISADVANTAGES

Cost of SF6 gas is high. Such substations are generally indoor, so they need a separate building Supply of gas to site is problematic.

17

APPLICATIONS
High voltage installations (above 115kv) Urban installations Indoor installations

18

CONCLUSION
Small installation size Protection against atmospheric pollution Noiseless operation Non-explosive Reduced maintenance Totally enclosed substations using SF6 gas as insulation that are also known as GIS.
