Enhancing Online Education Through Instructor Skill Development in Higher Education

Research Objectives
To examine participate perception the quality and

effectiveness in a six week, fully online training program and preparing online instructor. To study highlights strength and weakness of preparing online instructor [POI] . To plan and implement an online instructor training program.

Research Question
What were participant perception of the effectiveness

and quality of POI ? Which aspect of POI did participants find most and least beneficial? To what extent did POI improve instructors skills for teaching online?

Methodology
Research Design Used qualitative method Based on action research Instrumentations 20 Student (in two session during spring semester (2009)) Questionnaire (survey)

Data collection procedure Researcher developed survey to explore participants experiences with POI.(consists of both closed-open ended question) Survey discussed and reviewed with by faculty development manager in the teaching center that offered POI. Survey uploaded to question pro website.(available to the study participant in a solicitation email along with informed consent and study volunteer right with follow up email) All participant from two sessions asked to write about 100-200 words reflect on their training experience in last week course.

Findings
On this article, the researcher find : Participants perception of the content of the POI course Participants perception of communication and interaction Participants perception of feedback provided by POI Instructors Participants perception of experiences with the course Feedback from majority participant(+ve and ve)

Participant that provide positive feedback Comfortable teaching online, more competent than before POI Needed additional thought and particularly focused in on those parts of the course Course exceeded the expectations A few participant provide some negative feedback: Their spent time more to understanding what their should have than working on the assignment Course content too lean.(busy of work, very little content, discussion board dominated and was not helpful at all) Did not prepare to teach online.(methodologies are still unexplored,taugth how to take a course online)

Conclusions
The participant was satisfied with the course POI increased technological skills and pedagogical

abilities to teach online POI intrigued with how methods and technique for online teaching Modeling attention to different learning styles and needs.

Recommendations
Institutions should address the needs of online instructors

in a systematic and comprehensive manner Employ different mechanism to support instructors when teaching online Should offer various resources and develop support mechanism to encourage instructors to not only learn about effective online teaching Develop of more instructor to teach online carefully planned and implemented training programs for online instructors encourage greater participation and willingness to teach online
