Principle # 1: Focus on knowledge, competencies, skills and professional attitude

Competencies
Competencies in clinical skills (e.g., taking medical history, clinical examination, interpretation of findings, generating hypotheses, making priorities, providing justification, etc). Competencies in practical procedures (e.g., insertion of central IV line, nasotracheal intubation). Competencies in patient management.

Competencies
Competencies in dealing with solving problems, making decisions and handling emergency situations. Competencies in communication skills and demonstrating professional attitude. Competencies in patient administration (e.g., completing forms, providing data, consent forms etc).

Principle # 2: Encourage students to understand the scientific basis for clinical skills and resuscitation

Discussion
Understand the scientific basis behind pre-operative and post-operative care. Link the scientific basis behind the mechanisms of action of drugs with their clinical applications, therapeutic basis and side effects. Understand the scientific basis for complications of anaesthesia. Understand the mechanisms underlying resuscitation

Understand the rationale for ordering a particular investigation and what type of changes are expected.

EXAMINATION WRITTEN MCQ Exam: 50 MCQs: 40%. (28/11/2012) Final Assessment: (60%) 1. OSCE: 3-5 stations combined with OB/GYN: 30% (26/11/2012) 2. Technical Skill: 30% (This will be done as signed out)
