HUMAN MILK BANK PROJECT

Rotary Area of Focus - Maternal and Child Care

HUMAN MILK BANK - A service established for the purpose of collecting, screening, processing, storing and distributing donated milk to meet the specific needs of individual for whom human milk is prescribed. Benefits of Breast Milk 1. Proven by clinical and research studies to be the best source of nutrition for infants because of its compelling nutritional, immunoprotective, neurodevelopmental, psychological, social, economic and environmental benefits;

2. Components are not replicated by artificial formula so that infants who do not have access to their own mothers milk, a donor milk can be life saving;
3. Best alternative feeding option for both fullterm and preterm babies.

Brief Background - Existing Human Milk Bank Project Operator - DR. JOSE FABELLA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL A National Maternity Hospital and a Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital & Infant and Young Child Feeding (MBFHI-IYCF) accredited hospital - implements roaming-in and exclusive breastfeeding to all newborn babies, including those admitted at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Mothers stay in the hospital for as long as their babies are confined in the NICU until they are discharged. Major Donors - Philippine College of Health and Sciences Financed the construction of milk bank structure; - Montblanc Foundation - Donated pasteuriser, plastic containers, freezers, computer set, office tables and chairs; and - UNICEF Donated freezers and electrical breast pumps. Date of Inauguration March 6, 2008

Beneficiaries 1. Preterm babies, critically-ill neonates with necrotizing enterocoloties, feeding intolerance, immunodeficiency diseases, allergies, inborn errors of metabolism admitted in neonatal intensive care units (NICU); 2. Infants confined in other government and private hospitals; 3. Infants who are victims of calamities like floods;

4. Adult patients who are suffering from illness like Hemolytic anemia and cancer;
5. Midwifery/practicum students who conduct trainings in the facilityon breastfeeding; and 6. Doctors/health workers from other hospitals who intend to set up their own milk bank facility.

PROPOSED GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT To purchase additional pasteurizer to be donated to Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital. Rationale 1. FOR REPLACEMENT as existing unit existing pasteurizer is five (5) years old and has started to be out of service occasionally starting this year per hospital officials; 2. ADDITIONAL CAPACITY in the meantime that existing unit is serviceable; still

3. Being a government hospital catering to indigent families, it lacks the resources to buy a replacement.

Sustainability 1. Supply of Milk - 300 to 400 mothers daily deliveries at Fabella Hospital; - Walk in mothers; and - Establishment of additional collection depot initially in government hospitals and health centers in Manila through a MOA with concerned officials to be expanded to other cities and municipalities. 2. Operations A processing fee shall be charged to those supplied to private hospitals to cover expenses on supplies, utilities, etc.
