To be creative, a solution must satisfy one or more of the following conditions: 1. The product of the thinking has novelty or value (either for the thinker of for his culture) 2. The thinking is unconventional in the sense that it requires modification of rejection of previously accepted ideas 3. The thinking requires high motivation and persistence, taking place either over a considerable span of time (continuously or intermittently) or at high intensity 4. The problem as initially posed was vague and ill defined, so that part of the task was to formulate the problem itself. (Newell, Simon and Shaw)

Principals of Innovation
From Creativity To Innovation
Ideas are fragile. Ideas are organic. All ideas have value and should be given a hearing. The originator of an idea needs assistance in idea enhancement and in promoting the idea internally. The originator is the initial advocate of an idea and should be actively involved in its development. Only ideas which have been enhanced to demonstrate potential value will be brought to management

What is INNOVATION???
Innovation is a process of taking new ideas to satisfied customers. It is the conversion of new knowledge into new products and services.

Innovation
Innovation is a process of taking new ideas to satisfied customers. It is the conversion of new knowledge into new products and services Innovation is about creating

value and increasing

your business. "Without innovation, new products, new services, and new ways of doing business would never emerge, and most organizations would be forever stuck doing the same old things the same old way."

efficiency, and therefore growing

Forms of Innovation

Radical Innovation

Incremental Innovation

Innovation Processes
The Innovation process can be depicted as a series of funnels each getting progressively smaller. Typically sixty ideas into the top funnel only produces just one innovation. The funnels are labeled as the four phases in the process - idea generation, idea screening, feasibility and implementation

Creativity & Innovation Organizational Practices

An originator comes up with a creative ideas At each level of management ,Idea get Pruned and Refine Thus till the time the initial idea gets implemented, it would have gone through a number of hurdles.

Creativity & innovation Organizational vs Individual

High
Organizational creativity
Organizations based on continuous development, on systematic Research of Efficiency Successful Organization High Degree of Innovation

Few Innovation, mainly Immitations

Low

Low rate of Innovations Sometimes radical based on Entrepreneurial Spirit of Individual degree of Innovations based on radical

Low

Individual level creativity

Organizational practice of Innovation

Financial backing to innovation Give opportunities to employees Skillful recruitment policy Information from outside the organization Target being set for innovation Employees should be rewarded

Effectiveness Criteria for an Innovation process

Implement a few ideas at regular intervals Ensure feedback takes place - there must be communication channels to originators. Screening system should be simple, understood by everyone Ensure the system is promoted Transform ideas into reality at a reasonable speed - if the system is too slow we may be too slow to react to the market pace and turn off idea originators.

Introduction

PERCEPTION AND JUDGEMENT

FIRST-STAGE THINKING IS CONCERNED WITH PERCEPTION. IN SECOND-STAGE THINKING, WE MAKE JUDGEMENTS

PERCEPTION AND JUDGEMENT

PERCEPTION

DETERMINES WHAT WE KNOW, JUDGEMENT DECIDES WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT WHAT WE KNOW
(Philip Goldberg)

THE RISKS OF LEAPING TO JUDGEMENT

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT - EMPHASIS ON ENGINEERING THE PRODUCT RATHER THAN SEEKING ALTERNATIVE WAYS OF ACHIEVING THE SAME EFFECT. INTRODUCING NEW IT AUTOMATING SYSTEMS EXISTING PROCESSES RATHER THAN REORGANIZING THE PROCESSES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT BASED OPPORTUNITIES. CONTRACTUAL NEGOTIATIONS - ADDRESSING PRECONCEIVED ISSUES RATHER THAN QUESTIONING THE ASSUMPTIONS ON BOTH SIDES OF WHAT THE ISSUES MIGHT BE

THE RISKS OF LEAPING TO JUDGEMENT

REDUCING QUALITY FAILURES WORKING TOO HARD TO WEED OUT DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS RATHER THAN TRACING ERRORS BACK TO THEIR SOURCE AND BUILDING QUALITY IN CORPORATE STRATEGY RE-ENGINEERING - ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES RATHER THAN SPENDING TIME ASKING : WHAT BUSINESS ARE WE IN ?

THE TWO STAGES OF CREATIVE THINKING

FIRST STAGE SOFT DIVERGENT SECOND STAGE HARD CONVERGENT

WHAT IF? WHY NOT ? WHAT ASSOCIATIONS CAN WE FIND? WHAT RULES CAN WE BREAK ? WHAT ASSUMPTIONS ARE AT WORK ?

WILL IT WORK ? CAN WE DO IT ? HAS IT BEEN TRIED BEFORE? DOES IT FIT IN ? HAVE WE GOT THE RESOURCES ?

20 IDEA KILLERS
ITLL NEVER WORK ITS A BIT TOO RADICAL FOR THIS COMPANY WE TRIED IT BEFORE AND IT FAILED. HM. NOW SUPPOSING WE JUST CHANGES THIS LITTLE BIT, AND THAT PIECE.. WHATS THE POINT? ITS NOT RELEVANT TO OUR CURRENT STRATEGIC PLAN ITLL COST TOO MUCH. WE DONT HAVE THE RESOURCES/STAFF/MONEY/TIME/ EXPERTISE/ROOM/SYSTEMS . . . YOU HAVENT THOUGHT IT THROUGH. THAT REMINDS ME

20 IDEA KILLERS

NOT PRACTICAL. TOO COMPLICATED. ITLL NEVER CATCH ON. OF COURSE, THATS JUST THE SORT OF IDEA WE MIGHT EXPECT FROM YOU. LETS WAIT A BIT. I LIKE THE IDEA, BUT MY MANAGER . . . YOULL NEVER GET PEOPLE TO CHANGE. THATS NOT THE WAY WE DO THINGS ROUND HERE. WHAT ABOUT THE INTANGIBLES? GOOD IDEA. WELL APPOINT A COMMITTEE TO LOOK INTO IT
