The first two questions on the questionnaire are put into place in order to gain a basic understanding of the recipients of the questionnaire and ensure that they fit within my target group, on a very basic level. Twenty people filled out these questionnaires, and results show that 13 of them were males, with 7 being females, with 11 people being either 15 or 16 and 9 people aged 17 and over. Furthermore, the fact that the majority of the participants are male coincides with the general readership of my magazine, as my primary magazine for influence (NME) has a readership where 69% are males, showing a correlation between my magazine and NME magazine. Likewise, the absence of 13-14 year olds is necessary as it is unlikely that teenagers at that age will buy or display an interest in the magazine and are therefore more acquitted to genres such as pop as the majority of indie rock magazines, specifically NME, include large amounts of text structured in a more professional manner. This is also something I wish to emulate in my magazine. Subsequently, the slightly older audience are more likely to appreciate the content of the magazine, and this is why a slightly older audience was used as they meet the terms of my typical target audience.

Here, the specification questions begin to appear in order to narrow down those who will actually fit into my target audience, and those who will not. By establishing that 18 people have an interest in music magazines and 2 do not, the two are then deemed absent from the next question, where the 18 people who said yes are questioned further about the favourite genres in music. Here, 12 people chose indie/in die rock/alternative, with no participants choosing pop, 2 choosing hard rock/emo/heavy metal and 4 as hip hop/rap/ RnB. This consequently indicates that there are 12 legible candidates who are likely to express an interest in my magazine, which is excellent considering this questionnaire was distributed randomly (in order to gather fair, generalizable results).

If indie rock which of these do you read/have an interest in? Please tick more than one option if necessary.

The specification is continued in the next question, where the participants who fit perfectly into my target audience are asked to pick one or more favourite indie rock magazines. 10 picked NME as their favourite, whereas 4 picked Q and one picked Pitchfork, with the rest of the options not being contributing factors as nobody picked them. The fact that NME was the primary choice for the participants also contributes to the ideals in which I base my magazine around, as NME also serves as my primary influence in the construction of my own indie rock magazine and this insinuates that the target audience will also like mine. Moreover, my magazine will also incorporate Pitchforks focus on the subtler, alternate side of the genre, and the fact that this also a contributing factor to the results works in accordance with these ideals also. Proceeding on from this, the next question allows me to see how often indie rock magazines are read and determine whether they have a predominantly loyal readership/fanbase. 2 read indie magazines once in a while, 5 sometimes, 3 quite often, 1 often and 1 regularly, showing a strong spread of data but also introducing the idea that the majority of magazine readers only read music magazines on occasion, if they happen to come by them. I aim to fix this by reducing the price of my magazine and suiting it around their needs and interests.

RELEVANT ARTISTS:
Jake Bugg, Queens of The Stone Age, The Vaccines, The White Stripes, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Pixies, Frank Turner, Grimes, The Lumineers, The xx, Razorlight, Weezer , The Smiths, Mumford and Sons, Two Door Cinema Club, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Crystal Castles, Parma Violets These artists are typical of the indie rock genre and are a significant amount of them are ones I intended to include on my front cover (see featured artists). It is also interesting to see that certain participants have not chosen artists that are representative of the basic aspects of the genre, but rather the subgenres associated with it; and this can be seen with the selection of the xx (dream pop), Grimes (dark wave electronica), Pixies (grunge) and The White Stripes (blues rock), as well as numerous others. This complies with the ideals of my magazine perfectly; as I wish to incorporate both mainstream, well-loved indie rock bands as well as exciting new ones and those who provide a variant on the genre with their music and individuality.

How important would you say music is in your life?

Importance

This is vital to understanding the target audience. Young adults/older teenagers cite music as a huge influence in their lives, with many that will undoubtedly say it has changed their entire personalities, or ways of life and this is exemplified in the results of this question. Every participant agreed that music was important in their life, with one person stating it as quite important and 19/20 people stating it as important, emphasising the importance of music to fans of all genres, not just indie rock. It is for this reason that my magazine will be focused entirely on the music itself, as opposed to the mere presentation of those who play it, and will consequently suit the needs of the vast majority of indie rock fans with an interest in magazines.
