A short Introduction
 Example:
 Statement: [ Subject + Verb +
Object ]

 Active: I eat
rice.
Passive: Rice is eaten
by me.
 How to determine
Object?
 Ask question to VERB

(‘eat’) with ‘ what’ and

‘whom’.
e.g.: I eat rice. Verb: ‘eat’
Question: WHAT do I eat? Answer:
rice
Question: WHOM do I eat? Answer:
 Determining Object: 1st
Condition
 So,we find the answer is
‘Rice’

i. Make sure that the

answer is either Noun /
Pronoun.
- Yes, the answer ‘Rice’ is
 Determining Object: 2nd

does not refer back to the S
or, any other object.
- Yes, the word ‘Rice’
does NOT refer back to
subject ‘I’ or any other
object.
 Object comes first!
 ‘Rice’ then is the object to verb ‘eat’.
 While making passive voice, the
object (Rice) comes first in place of
Subject.

 Step II: Be verb
 Be verb, or any one of its forms will
be used after that.

 “Rice + Verb ‘Be’ + … .”

verb ‘Be’.

 How to choose the right
form of be Verb?
 There are two conditions to choose the
right form of ‘be’ verb:

iii. Determine the Tense from the verb.

Here, the verb ‘eat’ is in present form. So,
the sentence is in the Present Tense.
ii. Determine the number and person of the
Subject.
Here, the subject ‘Rice’ is in third person
singular number.
So, the subject Rice
should take the verb

form ‘is’
“Rice is + … .”
 Rule 3: Use the 3rd form of
the Main Verb
Next, the 3rd form of the main verb is
used.

- Here, the 3rd form of the verb ‘eat’ is

‘eaten’
