HIDDEN DESIGN

INSPIRED BY POEM DEVIL MAY CARE, JOSEPH A. WRAITH

INSPIRATION / INTERPRETATION

CONCEPT
The idea is to create a structure which provides the user with a choice and at the end have a self reflecting space for him to reflect on his previous actions and choices and also provide him with a quite space to come out with an idea of which choice to make in the future.

DEVIL MAY CARE

A poem of childhood dreams As a child I remember well this strange moment I will tell Put to sleep on an early night I awoke somewhat startled by this curious light I could hear his breathing As he grabbed my hand And told me he is taking me To another land And as I ride upon the Devils wing An evil spark, a hint of sting The smell of sulfur is in the air As I fly about without a care I feel the heat from his vaporous breath As he laughs a laugh of certain death I dont fear this thing, this soulless beast, no spirit inside, no heart that beats. As he glides slowly over ash and fire His demons they scream in a horrific choir Raising their voices above the din And feeding on souls in sin I ride about this hellish tour Still believing my soul is pure He grins at me and points ahead To lay me back down back in my bed And with a whisper he is gone And I fall back asleep until the dawn What makes it real and explains some things is that he left me with my own little wings Freedom to choose which path that would be embarked by the user.

Create a space to attract the attention of the user. Lure the user to try the space.

To get to this space the user basically has to first make a choice of which tunnel to take which would lead him to the core, the self reflecting room. The 2 choices that would be of choice to the user is either the dimly lit tunnel or the bright tunnel. Both tunnels are actually obstacles

A different place. Somewhere to unwind and perhaps escape the mundane routine of life.

JOURNEY OF THE SENSES SIGHT

In the dark tunnel the users sense of sight is challenged due to the lack of light with the structure. The user will experience momentary blindness as the eyes takes time to adjust to the diminished light. With only the dim band of light by the walls and the hanging light bulb at the end of the corridor guiding the user.

FEEL
Lighted tunnel

-Endless flights of stairs -Transparent allows natural light in

Dark tunnel

-Flat surface of the ground -Textured walls -Light bulbs

Silent room

TOUCH
Having the most important sense of the sight compromised, the user is expected to use his next most promising sense which is touch. The walls made of textured concrete would act as a guide

-Covered with felt -Soft heavenly like retreat room for people to reflect their choices/life -Sound of water flowing is calm and relaxing.

leading the user to the destination.

PURITY DESIGN
INSPIRED BY POEM DEVIL MAY CARE, JOSEPH A. WRAITH

INSPIRATION / INTERPRETATION

CONCEPT
The main idea behind the design of the structure is the idea of staying true to the things that makes you who you are. The reward at the end may not of the material sort but the satisfaction of not giving up due to hardships that one will endure and also the liberating feeling at the end knowing that one did things the right way.

A form of lure that attracts the user to approach it

This journey engages all the senses of a human being be it physical or emotional. Incorporated with existing landscape that is already present on site, the first half of the journey is meant to put the endurance of one to the test. After the hardship one will slowly see that darkness does not last forever and theres always a rainbow after the rain.

Experience different spaces.

Feel

JOURNEY OF THE SENSES

Sound
During the hike within the cave, the user is drawn to the sound of the waterfall crashing onto the tunnel at the end. This would be the subject that lures the user to journey till the end as he will be curious as to where the sound comes from.

Within the cave The user will feel as if he is in a very dangerous situation. Having to depend a lot on his sense of hearing and touching to guide him to safety will most certainly make the user feel unease and threatened. We are always afraid of the things we

cannot see.
Exiting the cave The user will feel so much more liberated and finally secure because he can finally depend on his sight again. Travelling in the tunnel The tunnel consists of 4 parts: 1. Entirely opaque the user will be exposed to more light but will still be restricted of view and would not be able to tell where he is at. The height the tunnel which would be taller then the user will make him fell slightly diminished. 2. Floor piece is transparent- the user will finally be able to tell where he is. However he may be having mixed feelings as to whether like the place he is at or to feel insecure. The height of the tunnel starts to lessen. 3. Roof piece is transparent - the user will have a view of the skies above. The height of the tunnel will also start to lessen to better suit the human height 4. Wall are transparent at this stage the user would have already been at ease to the location he is at and would begin to appreciate

Sight
The journey within the cave would be a rather hard one as the amount of light that the space receives would not be like a brightly lit room. With their sense of sight compromised the user will immediately be drawn to move to the light at the other end of the cave.

the views.

Touch
The user will have to also depend very much on their sense of touch, as they will not be able to see very well in the dark. They would grip or feel the sides of the cave walls or the ground for any slopes or bumps to avoid falling over.

5.

All four walls are transparent the last stage of the journey takes the user into a waterfall where he can feel as if he is being purified by the water. Water here also symbolizes the purity and innocence of the user which a symbolic reward for his accomplishment .
