Back-to-School Night

Special Day Class, Room 23

September 15, 2009

What is the Special Day Class?
—This class is comprised of students in Grades 4, 5, and 6
who struggle in academic areas due to disabilities.

—Students in this class are on Individualized Educational

Plans (IEP’s). As this indicates, curricular instruction is
to each student’s strengths and weaknesses.

—Students who are included in general education classes

in particular areas receive additional support in those
subjects in the SDC classroom.

—Our instructional aides are Ida Diaz and Nancy

Escarcega.
Textbooks Used in SDC
—Our instruction is based on the same texts that are used
in all classrooms in the Rosemead School District’

—These include the Houghton-Mifflin series for Language

Arts and Harcourt Social Studies and Science.

—Our district has adopted a new Mathematics program for

this school year from Macmillan McGraw-Hill. We will
also use other sources to present the curriculum based
on the California Standards and make it understandable
to your child.
Textbooks Used in SDC, continued
—To help our readers bring up their reading skills to their
grade placement levels, we use a program from
SRA/McGraw Hill called Corrective Reading. This
program is specifically designed for children in Grades
4through 12 who are reading below their grade level.
—We also use a series of leveled readers to allow students
to practice reading at the student’s current
instructional, or learning, level with the teacher (guided
reading).
—Math is supported with components of our new math
program, as well as other texts and Internet sources.
Classroom Rules
1. Be an active listener.

2. Respect others and their property.

3. Raise hand before speaking or getting up.

4. Complete all assignments.

5. Work cooperatively with others.

6. Know and follow all school rules.

Discipline Policy
— Each student has a “Star” chart and can earn stamps in many
ways: by staying on task, being helpful or kind to others,
making progress in the class work, etc. There will be a
reward as each chart is filled.
— Sometimes stickers will be given for working hard in class.

— There is also a class reward policy for our class. Each week
the class as a whole is given twenty starting points. Working
together, they can earn more points or lose points. At the end
of the week, if they have enough points, they earn a treat,
which is bigger for more points. (Since this reward is
frequently food, please let me know if your child has any
food allergies.)
Sixth Grade Program
—In order to prepare our sixth graders for middle school,
they will be participating in a general education class
for social studies, science, art, and PE.

—An instructional aide will accompany them and support

them in the general education classroom.

—They will receive additional support and time to work

on assignments in the SDC classroom.
